Planning on going to Switzerland in late May to early June and taking excursions within a 3 and a half hour radius of Zurich. Can anyone recommend “must do’s” while there and provide thoughts on most reasonable ways to travel? Would consider private transfers if they are available and associated costs if they can be provided. Thanks.

We took a train to Lucerne, which is a very nice small town, and really enjoyed the scenery and the town. We also have a stay planned for May and plan to rent a car for a day, so we can drive to Liechtenstein and then some towns near Lake Constance.

I will follow this thread as we are open to suggestions that others have to share.

We only had a couple of days in Zurich. We took the public transport from our hotel to do the Lindt Chocolate Tour. Tours fill up so you need to book tickets in advance. And go hungry - you'll get to eat pretty much as much chocolate as you want, and then they give you 8 chocolate truffles (one of each flavor) upon exit. We skipped dinner after that. 😋

The next day we took the 5-6 hour WOW Walking of Zurich With Cruise and Cable Car. I can't recommend this tour enough. It was fantastic and I can't imagine a better way to see so much of Zurich in a small amount of time.

Unless you are really inclined to do so, I'd skip going for cheese fondue. It's really expensive (I seem to recall around $38/pp). Our waiter let us split one and even then it was too much. It came with a bowl of bread cubes, mini potatoes, and little pickles for dipping. (Pickles were strange and I just ate them without dipping). We still got full and neither one of us even cared for it.

This sounds like something we may want to do. Thank you for the link. Which tour did you do and which of the tours includes chocolate tastings?

Europa park is a very quick train raise away
Worth visiting
In the middle of the Black Forest
Truly lovely
They stole a lot of American concepts and combined them into an amazing space
Just a suggested side trip

We stayed at the Marriott in Zurich, and enjoyed it, and the city, a great deal. We took the trip of a lifetime on the Glacier Express, between Zermatt and St. Moritz.

We just did the Chocolate Museum tour, the first one here: https://www.lindt-home-of-chocolate.com/en/ I think it was around $10-15/pp. We were given headphones for an audio tour, where you come to a marked location, press the button, and listen to some commentary. Near the end of the tour we got to try all these different chocolate flavors to see if we could guess (cookies & cream chocolate mint, etc), but you could eat as many samples as you wish. I also remember getting to try spoonfuls of liquid chocolate. On the way out we got 8 Lindt truffles to take.

We have had two 3-night visits to Zurich.

Lucerne is about a 45 minute train ride from Zurich. It’s a small city and easy to walk from the station. The chapel bridge is a must see, it leads to old town which is nice to walk around. The chapel bridge is a walking bridge from the 1300s and still has some paintings on the ceiling that depict the horrors of the Black Death. Really interesting and sad, but they give you an idea of how people were impacted.

We did a walking tour around Zurich, don’t remember who lead it, but if you can walk for 2 hours there is a lot to see. I’m sure you can find one easily. The Lindt tour was just okay for us, (not a big fan of those mass produced truffle balls), but it’s good if you’ve never done a chocolate factory tour.

Zurich has trams that are easy to use and get you around town, also uber is there. Old town has lots of restaurants, you can just stroll along and choose where you want to eat.

During our second stay in Zurich, we booked an etuktuk tour with fondue and wine. A bit pricey but different and fun. Less pricey, we also visited museums, and bought prepared food at the market, took the Polyban funicular and picnicked by the university.

It’s a great city. Enjoy.
