This couple lives on Maui at Wailuku, and they came to Hilton Kings'Land to stay for their usual vacation. They are old enough to be our parents, that old, but their experience at the Marriott hotel restaurant for lunch two days ago did not leave a good impression of Marriott service.

They asked for a table in the shade, and they were not given a table in the shade, just partial shade, and the lady acted put out by the request. There were other tables that were more shaded. They ordered food, took 45 minutes to get beverages, then the food came and it was cold and the order was incorrect. The server insisted that is what they ordered. How do you bring fish, when someone asks for a burger and a chicken finger plate?

Sounded like such a bad experience, and I was thinking we would try the restaurant sometime, but this older couple that we have visited with several times now, seem very sincere. I don't think they are making up stories. I would guess they are close to 90.

Marriott should be ashamed, and complaining to the hostess didn't bring out the manager.

It's a stain on the record of Marriott.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the restaurant there when we visited last Fall. We only ate there for the (free, with my Bonvoy status) breakfasts (we were staying on the hotel side, not the timeshare side) which were decent, but the service was pretty poor (and at a breakfast buffet, you aren't expecting much service to begin with.) The staff was friendly enough, but I didn't get the impression they really cared about much at all. We had planned to eat dinner there but went elsewhere because it didn't seem like it would be a good experience.

In all of the times we stayed in the Waikoloa Resort area we never ate at a restaurant at the Marriott.

The couple is going home tomorrow to Maui. They had great things to say about other restaurants that we are going to try, just as soon as I get over the cold I have been trying to thwart off for the last five days. I think I am at the end of the worst part of it.

We have stayed in the timeshare section multiple times and eaten in the restaurant many times. Our last visit was Thanksgiving week 2022. The service has always been friendly and acceptable if sometimes slow, especially in a busy time like Thanksgiving. Everyone is short staffed but the manager should have made it right. Sorry to read the report from the Maui couple.

I was there early July and ate several times at the restaurant. I found typical resort quality food and prices. The service I experienced was very good. I found the area overall has a significant staffing problem. Everywhere has staffing issues but Waikoloa seemed worse than most places. The employees are busing in from Hilo because the economics just don’t work. My first time on the big island so I am sure this is nothing new, but for example, some of the restaurants in the kings or queens shops were only able to seat half the restaurant because they didn’t have enough cooks.

The spirit of aloha of a few locals is definitely lacking. We went to Keikoa state park to look at the ocean and watch some turtles. The park was nearly empty, being a weekday, and on our way back to the car to leave after only about 30 minutes, a local lady, who was cutting her fingernails and toenails while sitting in her car, wanted to make us feel very unwelcome.

"How did you find this park?"

I politely explained that we read about it and have an app that directed us here.

She said, "This is a locals' park, you need to forget about the park and don't tell any of your friends, either."

Never heard of that park and google can't find it.

Try this one, 20 min from Waikoloa.

I am pretty sure that Cindy was referring to Kēōkea Beach Park in Kapaau.

That could be it. It was kind of on the route we traveled to/from the King Kamehameha statue. @lynne The Gypsy Guide app lead us to that park. It was pretty but not at all busy. I am sure it's busy on weekends.

The Aloha Spirit has apparently lost some of its luster.
