Marriott vs Hilton

Does anyone here own both Marriott (Desination Points) and Hilton?

I recently purchased a Hilton 7,000 point package (resale) and I went to a Marriott sales presentation today. I was impressed with Marriott, just as I was with Hilton and I'd like to know how the two compare. It seems that the Marriott has a much higher purchase price and that the point system varies greatly from resort to resort.

How many points would you recommend to have to get a 2 bedroom during peak season each year?

Yes I own both and they are both terrific.

HGVC has a superior point system, continues to expand its locations and points can be acquired resale inexpensively, and the reservation/inventory system is predictable and reliable.

Marriott has the larger portfolio of properties and offers a consistent product, always high quality, perhaps even a slight notch about HGVC. The weeks system is available inexpensively, but the point system is not available inexpensively, and the use of points themselves can be an expensive way to travel for a 7 night reservation.

Personally, I prefer (and I've intentionally constructed this) a combination of HGVC points and Marriott weeks. I own Marriott weeks that I use and weeks that I trade, and will selectively use Marriott points to add a day or two, but rarely will I make a Marriott reservation entirely with points. But that's just my preference.

I'm sure others will chime, but I do think the ideal ownership is a combination of the different systems (and Starwood plays a role too), based upon where and how you want to travel.

We own Hilton and Marriott. You can't go wrong with either. As far as trading goes Hilton trades in RCI and Marriott in II. We prefer the II resorts. You can't go wrong we either one. Buy where you want to go. I would not buy Marriott Destination Points. I would buy a resale week instead.

I agree with Greg. We also have hgvc and marriott weeks. We tend to use both systems because of their different strengths.

The only thing that i hate about hgvc is all the small fees you have to pay. Like booking fees for club season. Also their open season rates (for unused member rooms) were great a few yeara ago, now hgvc has raised the open season rates close to booking through hilton.com

IN regards to the number of points needed for a 2 bedroom high season for a week Orlando Grande Vista 3000, Hawaii Maui 6000 (island view) to 10,000 (Oceanfront) depending on view.

There's quite a bit of variation in the points cost for a 2BR 'peak-season' week (even in the same city as I show below) but with on-going refurbishments at all the properties, the grounds and units at all MVCI properties are maintained to a similar level of quality. As far as how many points you need to own/rent, it really depends on the environment/theme and amenities you are looking for. I don't think there is a 'one-size fits all' answer.

All of the following are the most expensive points requirements to secure a 2BR unit for 2016 (but not necessarily for the exact same week/time of year).

Grande Vista - 3500

Some of the resorts they showed us were $250 for a week in a 2 bedroom. This seems too good to be true, so I'm pretty sure they were misleading us. Does anyone know what they were showing us?

I'm sure whatever you saw was correct. The rates change drastically for different seasons and when you are booking last minute. What dates and locations did they show you?

They showed us all different dates. I asked them to show me July of next year, which I believe she did.

I've often wondered if it is possible to join II without owning a timeshare affiliated with Interval. If that were possible, that would perhaps allow you to simply purchase getaways when desired. And it would mean no annual MFs to worry about.

Does anyone know the answer?

MPO, don't mess with Marriott points, stick with weeks. As Tony the Tiger would say, "Their Great".

AFAIK, you need one to join, but if you sell it, you can continue your membership. They will never know that you sold your timeshare unless you try to deposit it.

I would not believe the sales staff on the Getaways. It is true that you can a week for $30-$70/ night but they will usually be in low seasons and for a studio. If you want a one or two bedroom in a higher demand season or resort they will cost significantly more and that is if you can even find availability. Don't buy into Marriott just to get access to the Getaways. Buy into Marriott weeks because of the preferred trading power within Marriott.

I use Getaways with Marriott and they are good, if you are traveling to an easy place in off time.

For instance, I use them all the time to Orlando.

They are nice, but not a sure thing and not if you are not flexible.

I have been recently very disappointed with HGVC resorts. The service has gotten to be very poor and the cleanliness of common areas in the resorts is disturbing. I have been considering purchasing Marriott after my last stay, rather than buy more points with HGVC. I primarily would use the resorts in Orlando and Las Vegas. As my kids get older I would eventually travel to other places.

I do like the booking system with HGVC, as I can use my points at most of the locations and have the flexibility of when I am staying and how many rooms and nights.

From what I am able to figure out, The Weeks is like a traditional time share and the DC is similar to the HGVC points system. Having both, seems like most comments recommend the weeks. And thaf is mainly due to pricing?

So, I did a quick check using all the Marriott codes

For July 2017, I am seeing only one getaway, 2 Bdrm in Orlando for $1,667.
