I heard the Marriott took over the Radisson Hotel in July 2006. They were going to refurbish it and it was going to become a timeshare. Does anyone know if this is true?
Marriott will definitely have a timeshare on Marco Island, as confimed in several threads on the Marriott forum, including this one. Marriott has not yet announced where the timeshare will be, but it is expected to be a high-rise property.
The last thing I read in the paper said that the Marriott was going to tear down the Radisson to build a new tower, but city council limitted the height to lower than what the Marriott wanted. The Marriot was then quoted as saying they may not be able to justify the business case at the reduced height, so all plans were on hold.
The Council voted 4-3 after the "second reading" in early August to approve Marriott's proposed 150 feet height for tower. That was lower than Marriott's original 175 feet height that they had requested and that the Council had not approved.
I think the plan is for 219 timeshare units. Part of the existing building would be torn down and replaced by the tower.
Internally, Marriott has confirmed that this project is going forward.
Council approved an increase in unit density, but not additional height. I guess Marriott has to redesign the floor plans or the whole building to get enough units on their footprint to justify the cost. I'm sure they will do it, since they just dumped millions into the Collier Blvd replacement project.
