Just back from a week at Surfwatch in Hilton Head. We really loved the resort. It was just beautiful. I wrote a review in the resorts section if you would like to read it.

Being from the West Coast we never really have heard much about Hilton Head except for what I have read on Tug. I must thank you all for your comments. Its really a super place especially if you like the beach. The water was about 82-84 degrees and the temperature was about 72-84 degrees. It was a very relaxing trip and peaceful. We spent a lot of time on the beach just relaxing and walking.

We also spent a day in Savannah which was nice.

Surfwatch was just fantastic. The resort and grounds just blend in perfectly together. Such a beautiful location.

I have posted some pictures of the resort here http://www.pbase.com/cp73/hilton_head_2012

I was there this past Easter and loved it just as much as you. The weather for us was much cooler than you had, though.

Your picture of the view is almost the same as what we had. We had the exact same view, except we were on the third floor, I believe.

We also like the resort. Our first time there was last month. We were also on a first floor in the other back building and we didn't mind it at all. Was a little worried about the proximity to the beach but we found it not to be an issue. The indoor pool is fantastic and I would imagine it is a big plus during the winter months.
BYW: were the cats still roaming around? My daughter and I sorta adopted them for the week we were there.:)

I agree the walk to the beach was nothing. I think we walk further when we park at the beach in California.

Yes the cats were still there. Lots of kittens around the resort.

I agree the Marriotts on the ocean on HHI are really special and the island itself for us represents the perfect beachfront vacation.

We can't wait to when the kids are older and we can spend extended time in the area.

It is our favorite in HH, also

Marriott is impressive.....

My DH and I stayed there the last week in Aug for the first time and the first time to HHI.
We are very impressed with this resort and Marriott as we then moved on to Grand Vista and Ocean Pointe to complete 3 weeks in Fla. We have returned to GV for the second year and OP for the third year.
SurfWatch is impressive and special and we hope to be able to return in the future. Marriott delivers a true vacation experience!!

I have never stayed at Surfwatch. Is there bike trails in that area? Can you ride all the way to town from there on bike paths?

Thanks Ray

The island is covered with bike trails so it's easy to get from one end to the other no matter where you want to go. But if you're talking about getting all the way to Harbour Town from SurfWatch you're looking at miles of biking and most of it will be alongside 278. SW is just about at the 6-mile marker on 278E and Harbour Town is about 7-8 miles further. Plus, you may have to pay the $5 entry fee at the Sea Pines entrance - some folks have reported to TUG that the guards have stopped them on bikes but Don says they've waved him right through every time.

Shelter Cove is much closer to SW if you're looking for a short ride to a marina setting. But it's scheduled for a major overhaul and doesn't compare in scope or setting to Harbour Town. I still like it for a nice stroll after supper around sundown, though.

Sue; Can't one always avoid that $5 fee if they ride their bikes into Sea Pines via the beach?

Shelter Cove Mall is the only thing scheduled for the overhaul, and that is adjacent but somewhat removed from "Shelter Cove, the resort area" (which has shops, restaurants, villas, etc). There are no plans for any changes to that area which you described as a marina setting. Below is the aerial view of both.

But you're right in that the Shelter Cove Marina area is fantastic for a stroll.....in the evening or anytime. The famous statue of King Neptune is pretty cool.
