Marriott rewards point for Interval exchanges or getaways?

Is it possible to gather Marriott rewards points for exchanges and getaways? As a Marriott owner I was assigned a rewards number, and when we checked in at Marriott Ko Olina they asked for it. I provided the number and now I see some points in my account (looks like a little over 400). I have a summer exchange into Palm Springs and I called Marriott to add my rewards number but they could not add it. I wasn't able to do it online either. Is there some other way to do it, or only at checkin?

Yes.

Call Marriott Rewards, and provide them with your reservation number. They will link the reservation to your account, and then you can see the reservation when you log into Marriott.com.

You won't get points for the amount you paid for a getaway, but you will get two things: 1) credits for the nights stayed, and 2) points for anything you charge to your room while staying.

This helps my husband's account immensely! We are about to take our 3rd getaway this year, plus have our week at Ko Olina and an additional week there (cash stay), so it helps him keep his platinum status.

There is a long thread on adding your rewards number, but its a simple process. You cant do it online.

1) you have to wait a day or two after exchange
2) look at your exchange and there should be a "reservation number" about a third of the way down page one. This is the same as a Marriott confirm number.

Call Marriott and tell them you have a reservation and need to add your rewards number. Dont tell them its II exchange. you go. Some reps think you cant do it and will stop right there. Give them the confirm number. They will pull it up and add it. There you go.

You probably got those 400 points for some room charges? Thats my guess.

You dont quite get points for anything charged to the room. Food etc.-yes. But tours and 3rd party charges do not get points. I LOVE GETTING THE NIGHTS!

(FYI didnt mean to duplicate your info--we were typing at the same time :D )

Sounds good - I was reading about the difference between points and status. I would love to be able to reach platinum status, that would be great.

Now what if I book an Interval Marriott exchange ot getaway for a family member? Would I be able to gain credit toward status, or would they get it because it is in their name? Thank you all!

All points/nights etc are in the name of the guest.

Whenever I book an exchange for one of my family members, I always book it in our name with my husband's Marriott Rewards number attached to it. Then I phone the resort and tell them my family member will be arriving first so they will have their name in the records and there will be no problem. The nights credit always go to the Marriott Rewards number on file.

you can also sign up for the Chase Marriott CC. 15 nights per year credit gives you instant Silver status and well on your way to Gold status (50 nights). You earn Marriott points for spending (bonus points for Marriott spending.)

Each year you get a free night at a Marriott hotel!!!! (Year one category 1-4. Thereafter Category 1-5.) This is well worth the annual fee.

Thats awesome this works. I didnt think it would because of the credit card issue. I thought if the cc swiped was in a different name then the members name their would be a problem. One time my wife used her card on a hotel reservation when we were both checking in and I didnt get credit. I get it sorted out, but they said it was because it wasnt my CC. Maybe hotels are different.

We haven't had any problem getting credit for the nights even if a different credit card is swiped. Although sometimes I give our son/daughter our credit card to use when they check in. We always use our Marriott credit card to make any kind of Marriott reservation (no matter who is actually staying in the room) and have never had a problem getting the credit.

Smart woman!!! The problem is that some Marriott front desks like in Palm Springs claim they only get reservations from Interval 2-3 weeks prior to arrival... but we can do that shortly before arrival, call and add the guest!

nice!!! Our daughter uses them from time to time. I WANT MY NIGHTS!!!!!

If you have one of the black premier Marriott Rewards credit cards, you get one night for each $3,000 you charge to the card.

Also, you can book a cheap meeting room in a Marriott and get 10 nights credit. To do this you have to contact the sales department and sign a contract. It's very easy and a good way to build up your nights.

Wow! Lots of great tips! I wish I did this earlier we used so many exchanges without knowing about the status reward possibilities!

Barb,

Do you also get a guest certificate for the II exchange, or do you count on giving the name to Marriott front desk? This is interesting -- thanks!

Yes this is very interesting. I always bought a guest certificate, and I buy about five getaways or so every year for family down in Palm Springs in the summer. With our exchanges, this could really get close to that platinum status if we could just add their names while we still stay on the reservation as the main guest, so we can get the credit.

I dont think she is getting the guest cert. That changes the name on the stay. SHe is just calling and adding an extra name to the stay to facilitate check in, I believe.

No, I've never requested a guest certificate. You really don't need one if it's someone in your family using the week. Actually, I'm not sure you would ever need one unless you were renting the week to strangers.

Had I used that strategy, 2011 would probably be my fourth consecutive platinum member year... I did not realize you could do that! My family would not care anyway, they don't have rewards accounts, so they would not mind me getting the credit. I would leave myself on the reservation, skip the guest certificate charge (darn I already bought platinum II membership which has free guest certificates; anyway the getaway discount is worth) and get status credit....

Could you elaborate on this strategy? Is the meeting room a non-guest room or a guest/hospitality room aka 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom suite w/a conference table in the living area? Are there any requirements for a minimum number of guest rooms that have to be booked or banquet services?

I can. Its a deal where you get 10 nights to book a meeting. The location depends--conf room hospitality suite, whatever you arrange with the property. Most have done a Courtyard--where its cheap--about $100.00.

Here is an extensive thread on Flyertalk about it.

Does reserving a room block for an event such as a wedding qualify? Reserving a room for brunch?

Our experience has been that the best phone number to call to add your MR# to a reservation is 1-800-MARRIOTT. This is the phone number shown in the error message when you attempt to add it online.
