Marriott Resort Fees, taxes and parking?

I own a Marriott TS on Hilton Head and last year I traded my HH week (via the II Marriott desk) in to Marriott Maui Ocean Club. I was disappointed at check out to learn I had to pay $50 in occupancy tax.

From a recent post on this board I learned that there is a $7 daily resort fee at the Surf Club in Aruba. Is there a list of Marriott properties that charge extra fees, parking and/or taxes to Marriott owners who trade in to a non-home Marriott resort?

These hidden fees can really add up. It also defeats every timeshare sales rep "inflation" protection" pitch.

The inflation protection pitch goes out the window once MFs are brought in to the picture. There is no such thing. You are protected from the inflation of the purchase of more TS weeks if you don't want to buy any more.

Do you always have to pay occupancy taxes in any Marriott TS you trade into one? Or just Hawaii and Aruba?

Many Caribbean islands charge "departure taxes" or "occupancy taxes" which are added to your airline ticket (St. Maarten) or hotel/TS bill (Aruba).

This is not a new concept, the City of New York institued a Hotel Occupancy Tax about 30 years ago as a great way to milk non-resident visitors. One of the first out there.

Is there a list of manditory fees at the various marriotts that one would pay as a result of staying there?

We're trading into MAW for the first two weeks in June - are these fees applied to all Hawaii resorts? The II confirmation certificates do say that we are responsible for any occupancy tax, energy surcharges, service charges, etc. but no dollar amount is specified.

It would be helpful to have a sticky about fees.

The state of Hawaii has enacted an occupancy tax that applies to all timeshare stays....Marriott & non-Marriott, owner, exchanger, renter, etc. This tax is to make up for the sales tax revenue they lose when you stay in a timeshare unit instead of a hotel.

It varies based on the size of the unit & the property. At my Ko'Olina stay last month it was just over $7.00 per night for the 2 bedroom unit. I would expect Waiohai to be around the same per night.

Is the ARDA fighting against this? This seems to only be a cash cow for the state of Hawaii. You are not renting a unit. As an owner you are already paying taxes on your ownership. This doesn't seem like it would stand if fought, much like the taxes on satelite services only.

I don't think it is mis-information. Marriott does collect a fee, where that fee goes is another story. The intent of the post was to inquire where additional fees or taxes are charges. It appears the list consists of 2 so far

1) All resorts in Hawaii
2) All resorts in Aruba

Anybody care to add any other locations or resorts?

Add $50 departure tax for St. Martin (added to airline ticket on major airlines, not on charters).

I think Costa Rica also has one.

A Manhattan Club owner should chime in, think it may charge NYC Hotel Occupancy Tax on exchanges.

Also add Energy Surcharges to Morritts on Grand Cayman (actual usage - metered) and Wyndham exchanages/points only usages on St. Thomas (was $9 per person/per day recently).

Also $3 per day energy surcharges for most Divi's in the Carribean. La Cabana on Aruba also has one.

I don't see this as an issue. If you are concerned about extra fees, taxes, etc. you should call the resort and ask what items you will be charged for upon check-out. It's very easy to search on the internet and find out about departure taxes, etc. from a particular country. There are numerous countries that charge a departure tax and we definitely couldn't keep an accurate tally here.

When you travel expect some additional fees. It's part of the price you pay for the experience. Well worth it, in my opinion!

I agree with Lisa and John. The list of places that charge tourists or non-residents an extra fee is too large to publish. It would be a lot easier to list those that don't. I'm planning a trip to Costa Rica and Panama next year and I know both countries have charged an "exit" fee in the past. In St Thomas you get a discount on just about everything if you are a resident. That's sort of a reverse tourist fee.

If you want to nit pick, you are wrong. The State or country charges the fee, not Marriott. Its not to hard to figure out who she thinks is KEEPING the money.
