Marriott Renting Question

We own an ocean front unit which we have reserved for 2007. We are considering renting the unit. My husband questions if the potential renter will get our ocean front unit or be put somewhere else. I say it is our unit and if we rent it, the renter gets our unit. Anyone have any feelings as to who is correct? It is a Marriott timeshare if that helps. Thanks. Linda

If you are renting it you are getting a guest certificate for your unit for the renter- so he/she gets your view.

If they own the unit would they need a guest cert.? Does Marriott offer these?

If a family member is using the unit, you can just add their name(s) to the reservation.

If it is a stranger renting the unit, I thought getting a guest certificate would be better so it is out of your name and they are responsible for registering with a credit card so if any damage is done it becomes their responsibility. I thought I had read that this was done for a small fee, but I'm not sure.

Hopefully someone who knows better will respond and we'll both learn.

The renter gets the owners exact priveleges, including view. As for guest certificate, none needed. All you have to do is put the reservation in their name. There is no cost for this. Customer service will create an electronic reservation with the renter's name on it. You can sometimes do it yourself on the Marriottt website. You can forward to the renter electronically. If you have to change it again, you can do that as well, again at no cost.

What do others know / think about this comment from a Marriott rep at an owner's meeting ... that when renting your unit, the owner can be held responsible for damages caused by the renter? This was after the change in the Marriott rental program and I was thinking that Marriott may be trying to scare owners from renting directly rather than through them at their low ball rental offerings to owners.

This has always been the case, so its not like it a new development. I've rented my units dozens of times, and have only used a rental agreement that addressed damages a few times. I guess you take a chance, but i think it is a small one.

Marriott takes a credit card imprint from whoever checks in. That will usually cover most damage.

Although damage is a risk, no one has ever reported on these forums of having been held responsible for such damage after allowing someone else (renter or guest) to use a week.

Our most recent renter merely took the reservation number we provided and added his own information, which subsequently showed up in the reservation when viewed online (Marriott not MVCI) through my account. <Shhh....;)>

During a similar rental last year, a renter who bought inadvertently had me as the "referral" since my MR# was on the account for the unit he rented. Didn't quite figure out how that all worked, but didn't complain either...

Have never used any guest certificate, just a rental contract. Recently, I've been changing (or had the renter change) the pertinent personal info on the reservation, but the rentals worked even with my name on the reservation. So far, so good...

Since my MR# was still attached, I got the stay credit and points for the renters incidentals.

Shhhh!! Don't say this too loud.
