You can buy 2000 points resale (redweek or such) for $14,000 or less ( generally $3-$4/ point passes ROFR plus then pay MVC $3/ point activation fee) which includes the activation fee that makes them the same as direct purchase, counts for benefits level, etc.

How much were they asking?

I think with some discounts, about $14-something per point.

If you didn't go in knowing that you want club points and that buying direct is the best deal for you, then its likely a great deal for the salesperson who wants their commission cheque at your expense.

Look into resale there's lots of decent choices, or buy direct from Spain and get a much better deal.

And you can buy Spain weeks direct that come enrolled with points for around the same price as points resale when you include all the fees and for a modestly lower maintenance fee.

Yes you still go through a closing company to complete the sale.
Needs to go through MVC ROFR
There are other places to buy the resale points- here for example.

Agree with Hindsite- no impulse buys.
You need to research the points, how many you would need, how it all works in detail before you buy anything.
Explore all your options including weeks.

We went to a presentation today and I’m trying to talk my husband out of going for it. Although it was a little tempting when they offered a bonus 6,000 destination club points (one-time use) if we buy 2,000.

The market price seems to be about $0.75/point, so 6000 one time points are worth about $4,500 -- not enough to make up for the too high price Marriott would charge you.

IF you ultimately decide you want to buy points, the resale market is the way to go (and 2000 points are not enough).

We are likely taking some of my in-laws weeks (enrolled in Abound) in the coming years so that will more than cover whatever we need. My only outstanding question is whether or not taking those weeks will count toward our Owner Status tier. It would be enough to put us into Executive and the 13 month booking window would be nice.

Yes, as the bundled weeks are sold enrolled and electable into Abound Points.

Enrolled weeks transferred parent to child will remain enrolled and so then will count towards you benefits level.
Any Abound purchase counts towards benefits level- enrolled weeks and any points (direct or resale).

You may need to explore how everything is titled to be sure the names match for one account.
Transfer must be parent to child remain enrolled.

Bundles are not new- they are the way to buy enrolled weeks. Weeks purchased on the resale market are not enrolled.

It is an interesting question if taking from "in laws." By this I understand you to mean your spouse's parents? Others can chime in, but you should verify how title should be taken by MVC to keep them enrolled. They may place them into a new account in only your spouse's name which would not add toward existing status in your (presumed) joint account.

It depends on what you call your "inlaw" Your spouse's parents maybe your inlaws but they are not your spouse's inlaws but their parents. So you can transfer their points into your account. BUT if it is your bother's inlaws that would not work

They are still selling gold weeks for what works out to be about $6/pt and silver weeks for about $5/pt ( 11,000 Euro for a silver week worth 2200 pts)
Note closing costs are included in the price.

I was also told that currently Spain weeks can be deposited into Interval and trade for other "non spain" MVC weeks.

The Bonvoy points are worth maybe $2500-$3000; the plus points about $3400. Still a lousy deal. Still more than the cost of resale after netting them out of the purchase price.

Why buy 1500 points, if you just want to get next level you only need 1000. You can buy just 1000 resale instead of being forced to buy and pay for 500 more points than you need.
Once you pay the junk/fee, points are points and you get all the benefits. You should be about to get past ROFR at 3.5/point + $3 enrollment fee.

So do you think 4500 plus points (one time use point) + 400,000 Bonvoy points are worth the extra $16,000+ you pay to buy from Marriott.


You could rent 4500 points for less than $3,600 (4500 *.80, highest price I see is .77 but rounded up just to be safe) which is same as plus points.
Bonvoy points without current Bonus would be $5,000 or if you count the bonus (40% bonus through Dec 7) to get to same amount of points would cost just $3600

It is the first time I've seen Club Points AND Bonvoy points offered as an incentive. Usually it is one or the other.

MVC Spain weeks deposited into II can exchange into another MVC week location, there's no block on exchanging back into Spain, and there's a small home resort advantage for exchanging back into your home resort. Silver Spain weeks trade well in II, reliably achieving 2better seasons and larger units and into high season now and then.

Yes you do!
You pay $3-$4/ point to the owner and then $3/ point fee to MVC and the resale points then function the same as direct purchase.

Are you moving from owner to select? There is not much change in benefit. It gives platnum Bonvoy instead of gold but really nothing else of note.
