I'm looking to buy a MOC 2bd floating week timeshare in the Molokai, Maui, Lanai buildings, but never owned a timeshare before. I have a couple of question at this point. The unit I'm looking at has a booking in 2025 that I would take over. I'm certain that I can't go that week. Does anyone know how easy/hard this would be to move dates in 2025 after purchase and rough fee to reschedule a date that's already booked? Also how hard is it to get bookings if I'm not Right at the 12 month booking, let's say like 9 months out? I'm sure I'll have a few more questions , but any assistance with these questions would be appreciated.
I've encountered this where I purchased a unit that had a week reserved, and I personally could not use it. The nature of timeshares being what they are, it's unlikely you can get the week you want for personal use (in 2025) therefore your options are either 1) don't take 2025 usage or 2) buy 2025 usage and then try to rent the week.
Personally (and as noted by others), I've found the Maui rental market to be very weak (at least it was in 2024) and too early to tell about 2025. But if the reserved week is a good one, perhaps you can rent it out to someone else, and then rent what you want for your own trip.
I'm sure this has been discussed on TUG and I missed it, but I don't know if it makes sense to own Maui timeshares right now. There is so much turbulence (in many ways) that it may be worth letting things settle.
I still love Maui -- still my favorite -- and my heart breaks for the locals and the changes in circumstance. I've been multiple times since Aug 2023 and there is no denying that it is different. Fingers crossed for stability.
Best,
Greg
