Checked in to the MVC portion of the resort yesterday and here is a brief report (will post a fuller one in the review section). Check in was easy and the Royal Sonesta and MVC seem to be working very well together. MVC check in desk is easy to find, large and well staffed (despite reports of it being hidden in a basement somewhere) - just beyond the main Royal Sonesta check in desk in a space that used to be a clothing store. Lots of signs to guide the way.

The bell desk was efficient and happy to help, and will valet park the car for free while you check in until 10 pm; after that $30/day unless you move it to self park.

Everything here seems to be open; restaurants, pools, yoga and aqua aerobics etc. Dukes is very up and running and has music every day. There is still construction going on for the RS, some of it right across the hall from us in the Kahili building but they are just painting and it is quiet.

Setting up a charge account with RS is easy (needed for room charges for room service, the market shop etc). Took a few minutes at the RS desk. Credit cards work fine too.

The 1 bedroom room has a lot of advantages; 2 of everything. Two bathrooms, TV's, temperature controls, microwaves and frigs (small one in the BR and 3/4 size in the main room), coffee makers. Kitchen however is limited - microwave, but no cooktop or oven, and nothing more complicated than basic dishes, a blender and a coffee maker. But surprisingly easy to make that work unless one wants complicated dinners or is trying to feed a family.

Happy to answer questions.

How exactly do the room charges work? When you setup an account with RS, are you really charging to your room or to that account? If you setup that account how do MVC related charges work (like the occupancy tax)? Do you really have two charge accounts; one to your MVC room and another to your RS charge account?

To be honest, I haven't used it. Seems easier just to use a credit card at the store or Dukes. My understanding is that it goes to a RS account charge but I will ask when I go by the desk.

Hello all,

With apologies, i’m clearly rusty on timeshares, what is Royal Sonesta? Apologies for asking a basic question!

Best,

Greg

Sonesta International Hotels Corporation is a hotel company, similar to Marriott International (hotel company). Just on a much smaller (miniscule by comparison) scale.

I can't answer all of your questions. But the charge is a convenience only. You don't get any Marriott points for charging to your room.

I was there for 18 days in December. One thing that struck me is that this place has the most uncomfortable furniture I have ever experienced, both indoors and out. I think they must have worked to find it.

Did they take over management of the property? Is Marriott only a timeshare now? Is Obama still president? Thanks.

Greg

The account just charges food and beverage. Nothing about taxes and comes from Royal Sonesta rather than Marriott.

GregT this reminds me of the situation with Four Seasons and Parc Hyatt, only this one seems much, much better. Less like a shotgun wedding but a real cooperation. It feels lovely here and all of the facilities are readily accessible.

I'm thinking about trading into Kauai Beach Club, seems to be some good inventory in Interval right now for May travel. Does anyone have a resort map with view categories?

Was just there. Seems that there is a building for OF and one for OV. If you don't mind the quite limited kitchen and no w/d in the units, the property is incredibly beautiful and we loved the resort. We had a lovely OV on the 8th floor. Be aware that Royal Sonesta is renovating in the Kahili building when we were there. Although described as construction in "an adjacent resort" they were working 9-5 every day right across the hall from us.

10spro let us know what you decide about buying. Would be curious about what you find for prices etc. After our visit buying there had some real appeal.

Oh no, I'm not buying. I already own enough weeks which I use for trading in Interval.

Oops, missed the "trading". We got there through an II trade as well. If you go in May I hope you get OF or a high enough floor that they have finished the renovations there.

Ok I just took the plunge and traded into KBC. Anyone know what building the dedicated 1BR Oceanview unit might be in?

Yes - Kilohana and Wai'ale'ale Wings are OF. Great trade. Great staff and wonderful service. Be sure and look around the property as you walk around; there is a lot of amazing Asian art, landscaping and waterfalls. Just plan on not much of a kitchen but Dukes is great and there are several places in the mall right across the street.

No, sadly it's Ocean View, not Ocean Front, but still happy to get that...if they honor the II view code. And I think one of the biggest challenges staying at KBC, now that I see the map, will be to limit the number of times we go to Duke's for Hula Pie.

The OV building is Kahili where we were and it is really great. And all of the Marriotts where we have ever stayed in many years have honored our view (except Waiohia). It is still faces the ocean flat out, only from more of a distance, and our 8th floor room had a gorgeous view. It is a good location in a different way (closer to the pool, parking, morning coffee area).

We went to Dukes a lot, but totally skipped the hula pie ;). They have very decent food at reasonable prices. And else nothing is too far away and walkable. The pre-arrival team was wonderful so ask for a high floor room. And if you are staying long enough that laundry matters, it is on 8 and I believe 3 and 6th floor. We actually liked that building as much as the OF one we stayed at before despite the construction. The valet were great; they will take you luggage, valet park you car at no charge until 10 pm and after that it is $30/night. Self park is very close by. As you can tell, we loved our stay.

[Another thought: you might ask the pre-arrival team email, which you will get, where in the resort the construction is when you are there. As I mentioned ours was right across the hall but we had such a great view we didn't care that much. By May it will have moved on but you can ask to avoid it if it matters to you. It is 7 days week and by then it might be in OF!]
