We will be at the Marriott in Galloway , outside of AC, for a week starting labor day weekend. Any suggestions for outstanding casinos, restaurants, day trips?
When we were there 4 years ago we took a day and drove down to Cape May. It is a quaint town at the south end of the beach road. Nice eateries and made for a pleasent break.
Go to the Crab Trap in Somers Point for a great dinner one night. This place is great. Get directions from the concierge. They have the best directions. I tried myself last time and it took 10 minutes longer. It is about 20 minutes away, but well worth it. It's a Surf & Turf place and so popular that it is pretty busy every night. I don't think they take reservations.
Last year we did a day trip to Philadelphia for some historic sites and to get a great cheese steak. It took us 45 minutes to get there.
We went to the Borgata one night for a nice casual meal at Wolfgang Puck American Grille and then some gambling. Nice place. My buddy was winning a lot of loot at craps.
We are at the Galloway Marriott right now. In Cape May we took the kids to the free zoo. It was very nice. On the way home from there we stopped at Ocean City. This was a nice way to do it. This evening we went to Atlantic City. If you park in Caesar's you are at the mid way mark on the boardwalk. The outlets are within walking distance. We ate in the pier at Caesar's at Game On a sports bar (tv's are over the urinals per my husband's report).
No kids will be going with us. Some long time friends of ours will be meeting us there and staying with us a few nights. We like good meals, sightseeing, some gambling, shows.
There is a spa at the resort. Has anybody tried it? Does the Marriott hotel provide some good dining or is it typical hotel fare?
We are thinking of spending a day in cape may and at least one in AC. I have never been to OC N.J. It sounds like that might be worthwhile.
My wife has enjoyed the services at the spa. It always seems pretty busy. You may want to book ahead of time.
The main dining room at the hotel does have a good meal. I wouldn't consider it normal hotel dining. There is also a bar lounge in the hotel that serves pretty good food, but pricier than you'd normally think of a bar lounge.
The Sunday brunch at the hotel is wonderful...they used to have a seafood buffet on Friday nights as well...not sure if they still do. You will enjoy the adult pool and Cape May. We were not impressed with Ocean City...probably because they've cleaned up Coney Island over the last few years, we go there a lot, and Ocean City in our opinion was not as nice. Coney Island is a short subway ride for us. Ocean City probably would have been great had we not had such high expectations!
The spa is wonderful. This year was the first time that I haven't had to make reservations in advance. They had lots of openings over 4th of July week when we were there...sign of the times, I guess. They have not adjusted their pricing for sure.
Things to do:
1) Smithville Village--a few miles north of the resort on US Rt 9. Lots of quaint shops and good restaurants. The Smithville Inn has nice atmosphere and decent food.
2) Cape May-Great restaurants..we especially enjoy the Mad Batter for Breakfast or lunch. Might be nice to take the Cape May Ferry to Lewes, Delaware. Quaint shops in Lewes and nice to walk around. They offer a shuttle to the outlets which are about 15 min from Lewes.
3) Ocean City-Nice Boardwalk with good shops.
4) Atlantic City-Fun to walk on Boardwalk. Our favorite Casino is the Borgata, though it is not on the Boardwalk. If you go to boardwalk casinos you can park at Caesars and walk north or south on the boardwalk to other casinos.
5) Wildwood-Lots of rides and 3 waterparks. More for kids, though. Wildwood has the best beaches IMHO. We live near LBI and like the beaches there, but LBI is about 40 min north of the resort.
Restaurants: My favorite casino restaurant is the Old Homestead at the Borgata. Excellent steaks. For Italian most people love Carmines at the Tropicana.
My favorite restaurant in that area is at the Renault Winery. They offer a 7 course meal and the food is great. The atmosphere is very romantic. You can take a tour of the winery before dinner and they offer free wine tasting.
The Ramshead Inn (near the GSP) gets great reviews, but I don't think the food is fantastic.
IMHO September is the nicest month of the year in NJ. Beautiful days with low humidity.
We are going the first week in October. Is the adult outdoor pool still open then?
We like the rustic..nothing fancy..Oyster Creek Inn. Also good Italian at Tre Filgio on Black Horse Pike. Don;t forget great subs at White House Subs in AC.
The Gourmet Italian Restaurant is very close to the Marriott. The food is plentiful and tasty! I would go again. There is a relaxed bar side and a nicer dining side. The price is very reasonable.
