We (family with 2 kids) are looking to spend a week in D.C. in summer 2008. We will use a Marriott 7 night stay certificate for a category 5 hotel. We will not rent a car, so we'll be using public transit. Does anyone have a favorite Marriott hotel to recommend? We like the idea of staying in a Residence Inn as we can eat-in to reduce meal costs, but are open to your thoughts. Thanks!

We stayed at the Residence Inn in Alexadria, VA. It was very nice and only a short walk to the trains, and there are many very nice restaurants within short walking distance. Indoor pool was nice too.

The JW Marriott is great, just a couple of blocks from the White House and the mall. 1 block from the National Aquarium (small but nice to visit).

If you get on the concierge floor (used to be an extra $10 a day), you have an open continental breakfast buffet on your floor and honor system cocktails at night. Fill the kids up on Coissants and jelly and no need for lunch.

Lots of affordable eating in WDC. Takeout from Chinatown is a great example. The extra commuting time and train costs make up for any savings on food IMHO (and mom deserves a break too!)

We are in WDC approximately 6X a year! We only stay at Marriotts. Our daughter was in college at George Washington University and is now living there after college. She was just married in Oct.........so we fianlly get to stay with "them" for free!! My very favorite Marriott is the Renaissance Mayflower. It is an historic hotel in a very safe, good area of DC and we have loved the "extras" such as calling for a wake up call the night before (so what if we want a wake up call for 9:00AM) because, with that call it entitles you to coffee, tea, and hot chocolate service outside your door! The metro stop is Farragut North and it is just a block from the hotel. The very best Marriott for ease of getting around is the Marriott Metro Center. It is on top of the metro center station which is where most changing of lines will occur. Again, excellent location and good area for dining, getting around, ect. In regards to the other poster, we have stayed at the Residence Inn in Alexandria, and while it is fine, it is 20 minutes into the city, the trains run further apart such as 13 minute intervals rather than 4 minutes. That doesn't seem like much, but when you are tired and ready to go home it is a hassle to get there 45min later. I much prefer staying in the city. If you need a nap, need to stash a purse, freshen up, it is so convenient to just ride the train a few stops.Have a great time, email me if you need further info. I feel like I know the city so well after spending so much time there. It is a great vacation spot. Every thing is free, there is so much to see, the kids will adore the metro line. Good call on not renting a car. It is not worth the aggrevation. You could rent one for the day (from the hotel) just for the day you want to tour Mt Vernon. (George Washington's home)

Unfortunately, the Renaissance Mayflower, the Marriott at Metro Center and the JW Marriott, all recommended in this thread, are category 6 hotels and don't fit what the OP wants. All other Marriott properties in the DC area are category 5 or below.

Marriott Metro is an excellent location -- right at a metro stop. We have stayed there 2x -- well worth the points to have such a good location.

Old Town Alexandria is a wonderful place, cobblestone streets, quaint shops ,Potomac River and places to eat but you are further away from the city and when a family is tired of walking and sightseeing things can get pretty testy. Our son works in DC and lives in Alexandria. Residence Inn is in a nice area in Old Town.

DC is a wonderful place for a family vacation. So much to do and so much is free.

Have you checked your dates for standard points use vs higher points dates? We just got back from Asheville and only 1 Marriott was standard points although a 20 minute further drive I am glad we stayed there.Certificates are not standard point use at all hotels and for any season. Sometimes there are bonus points offers but probably not when school is out. The free breakfast does add up to quite a savings for a week.

Thanks Dave for your assistance.

Can I "upgrade" the 7 night stay certificate from a cat. 5 to a cat. 6? I'm assuming I have to use some points to do that? How do I make that happen if I want to upgrade?

Yes, except for certain promotional hotel-stay certificates, you can upgrade a hotel award certificate from the stated category to a higher category by using additional points. Simply call Marriott Rewards to do it.

My husband and I stayed at the Wardman Park Marriott in 2001. It was a wonderful hotel. We used a category 5 certificate and were automatically upgraded to the concierge floor on check-in. Our room was very large and could easily have slept 2 adults and 2 kids. It was within walking distance to the zoo and across the street from the metro station. Very easy access to the mall, museums etc.

We went with our kids in 1996 and stayed at a suite hotel in Alexandria. Can not remember which one. Again with the metro, it did not seem too far away.

Have a great time. Remember to contact your congressman ASAP for prioity tickets to tour the White House and other tours. We did this when we went with our kids and received prioity tickets to tour the White House, engraving building (where paper money is made) FBI building and one other that we skipped.

I'm not sure about the other properties but the JW has an indoor pool. Since I work a couple of blocks from the hotel, I have recommended it to several of my colleagues for their family vacations and they have all really enjoyed the location. While you won't be able to cook in your room, there is an food court attached to the hotel which offers inexpensive meals. You are two blocks away from the metro.
