Hi
We are going to be going to the DVC at HHI this May.
We are driving from central PA and we are going to drive down I-95.
We thought we would break the drive down to 8hrs one day sat and then 4 hrs the next day sunday and arrive at the resort sun hopefully noonish or 1pm.:whoopie:

Do you guys know what would be a convenient Marriott to sleep over night on sat on the way down and home?

We would probably need a Fairfielsd Inn or residence Inn for our family of five.

The drive is supposed to be 12 hrs. Is the traffic around DC horrid on a sat??

Thanks for your help.:hi:

First, under Advanced Search on the Marriott website, there is a button to find hotels along a route. Check there to see all the hotels along your route.

Not knowing exactly where you are starting from, I back tracked from Hilton Head and it looks like about 4 hours from HHI is Fayetteville, NC or Lumberton, NC. Florence, SC might be an option but it's about another hour south of Fayetteville. I'm not sure about quality of the Marriott properties but you can always check Tripadvisor to get an idea.

thanks I am going to try to use the advanced search on Marriott's website to see if that will help with finding hotels along the route.

And knowing what towns are about 4hrs from HHI helps alot.
Thank you.:)

Last year, we stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Lumberton on our way to Hilton Head. It was an easy drive to HHI the next day. The rooms were clean but small. I am not a big breakfast eater, so the free breakfast was perfect. The Fairfield Inn has a very small fitness center and an outdoor pool. We had dinner at the Black Water Grille in Lumberton and had a coupon for a free appetizer from Marriott. I really enjoyed our meal, but then I’m not hard to please. I would stay there again if I needed a place to rest for the night.

We used to drive to Hilton Head from Toronto, and always stayed at the Residence Inn, next to the Marriott, just off the I-77(?) at Charlotte NC. Very convenient and a nice hotel, with lots of restaurants nearby. It is a short 4-5 hour drive to HHI

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. :)

I think we will try to go with a Residence Inn since with my family of five and 3 small ones (7,5,1) we need the extra space.

You guys are always great and very helpful.
Thanks fellow Tuggers. :whoopie:

I'm not sure where in Central PA you are coming from, but you can avoid DC traffic altogether if you take certain routes (they are faster also). If you aren't in a hurry there is a much better way that avoids a lot of 95 also, but is still on main highways. P.S. there are only two RIs along 95 from the Virginia/NC border and the SC/GA border (Rocky Mount, NC and Florence SC). Florence is the best bet, but you may have a bit more driving on day one and less on day two.

I've done this trip about five times in the last several years from right near Dulles Airport (Virginia) to HHI, and if you want some tricks, just shoot me a PM.

Big Matt,

We travel from Montgomery County Maryland to Hilton Head several times a year. I hate the traffic. If you know any shortcuts or tricks, I'd appreciate if you would share them.

We also stayed at the Fairfield Inn In Lumberton on our way to HHI, and we were pleased with the room and the free breakfast. It was set up more like a buffet with hot breakfast sandwiches, and you could also make your own waffles.:D

Avoiding I-95

We have driven to HHI several times from Central PA (near Harrisburg). We often take I-81 to I-77 to I-26, then connect to I-95. Usually encounter much less traffic, and the estimated time for the trip is not much different from taking 95 starting around DC. Not so many metro areas on this route either.

Have a great trip! :whoopie:

Thanks for the suggestions on avoiding I-95:)

You guys are great:clap:

big mack, share your tips

Hi Big Mack. Would you be willing to share your tips here so we can all see them....would appreciate it!

We also take 81 whenever heading south as it's much nicer. Also, this time heading back from Florida we took 95 then 64 (I believe) right out of Richmond to 81 and it was nice to avoid DC traffic.
