So the money I paid for the package will count towards the downpayment should I decide to buy. What happens if I decide to buy at another Marriott? I suspect not since I will be giving my business to another but has anyone tried this?

Thanks.

In many cases the salesperson at any resort is able to sell a unit at any of the other Marriott resorts. So they may be able to apply it to another resort purchase. Depending on where you are looking to buy, you may be better to consider resale. The savings on resale will far outweigh the money spent on the Encore Package the saving. We found this to be true when we purchased our MGV resale.
We consider the money spent on our preview package at MGV as well spent, it gave us a chance to find TUG and to consider our other options, we would have spent far more money if we had bought the TS that day at the presentation rather than the encore package.

Thanks for the info. Judging from the posts in this board, there are about five TUGgers interested in the same resale unit I'm interested in (and there's nothing available out there that I or anyone else can see) so I might just have to forget the #1 TUG rule and explore the developer option at some point.

You should be able to use your encore payment as your downpayment for any Marriott. (If you decide to purchase through the developer rather than through resale.) Let them know you are not interested in purchasing in that area, but you are interested in a different Marriott. You can work through that development using your encore money but purchase a different property...I would discuss this with them before you go though, if that is something you are wanting to do.
