I noted the Marriott card ranked low. While we still have our Marriott card to pay our annual fees with (and get our "free" night). We have started using the Ventures card the majority of the time.

In fact, I got ticked when I read on TUG a few months ago that some of you were getting bonus offers if you spent a certain dollar amount. We "had" used our Marriott card exclusively for a couple of years and the way we were rewarded for our business was our promo threshold was spending $5,000 a month on our Marriott card for three months... when many of you were told you only had to spend $1,000 to qualify for the bonus points. Once I saw that they didn't value our good customer track record, we switched to the Venture card.

My Marriott Visa only comes out of my wallet in places that don't accept American Express. The Marriott Visa yields 1 point per dollar spent. The Starwood Amex yields 1 point per dollar spent. 1 Starpoint is worth about two to three times what 1 Marriott Reward point is worth.

Other than spending at Marriott locations we're the same way. We get 5% on gas, food and drug stores from Clear Blue Amex. 3% on dining and 2% on travel with Costco Amex. Spend alot at Costco with one or the other Amexs mentioned.

Only other spend is with Marriott Visa but that doesn't amount to much beyond the MFs that I pay and the Marriott vacations that we take. The MFs do get me 70k + in points annually so that is why we stay loyal to Marriott because its easy to stay platinum with them.

I have a good experience so far with the Chase Marriott branded card. I pay all my Airfares, Car Rentals, Marriott Hotel stays, and MVCI yearly maintenance fees with this card. Nets me on average 50K MR points per month.

There is no foreign transaction fees charged either and that is a big money saver for me. I spend lots of time traveling to Europe each year.

I have found customer service to be very good as well especially when traveling abroad.

KOBC x6, Westin Kierland x2, and we went to the darkside and bought points!
The article acknowledges the analysis didn't calculate the extra perks. For example the one MR elite night per $3,000 spent can really help a person make gold or plat which can have great value. Likewise spending $x to get free nights is a perk. Anyway, it is interesting and I appreciate the link. I guess my only point is it's not a simple analysis.

Venture credit card promo

For those considering the Capital One Venture Card, now it may be a good time to apply since they rolled out a new promo called the "Double Miles Challenge". One can get up to 100,000 miles if they provide an Year End statement from another major rewards card showing that they spent at least $50,000 in 2011. Lower spenditures will also qualify for the "challenge" and basically CapOne will retroactively reward 2 miles per spent dollar after the credit card application has been approved!!
Looks to me that the value of the max reward of 100,000 miles is $1,000 that can be used for travel redemptions or shopping or lots of other things.
Not bad and it will absolutely cover the annual $59 fee (which is waived the 1st year), not to mention the other perks such as 2 miles per dollar spent, the No Foreign transaction fee and the Rental car protection to name a few.
