Marriott Barony Beach

I would suspect this is due to the booking being added to the Bonvoy account, I can't imagine they are manually looking at each and every reservation.
Perhaps, but they could also have reporting that tries to match up based on email, phone, address, last name or a combination of those.

It could also be happing during the marketing pre-arrival call. They always seem to mention that we are owners because they are looking at our owner record. I am not sure what percentage of reservations marketing targets with the pre-arrival call.

While II doesn't pass owner information along to the resorts anymore, it has been my experience that when checking in on an II booking that the resort knows we own with Marriott. I suspect they are looking it up manually or marketing is updating the record when they are going through arrivals to see who they want to solicit.
I used points this past summer to book a week at Barony, my son and family rented a simultaneous week. Someone(?) within Barony recognized the same last names on 2 reservations and arranged for us to have villa's next door to each other. This was accomplished without a request from us or having any prior knowledge that this was a possibility. Needless to say, our vacation there was priceless.

I've had mixed experiences for my exchanges. Surf Watch indicated that they had received my ownership information from II, but Grand Ocean and Ocean Point said they don't get ownership information from II any more. I always call.

I've noticed that resort stays during slow season are more subject to changes in villa types. Hilton Head resorts often due refurbishments during Jan-Feb so large blocks of rooms may be unavailable. This often requires moving people to other building types, so owner probably are the people who get priority and moved to a better view type.
