two great half-days

short 2-hr drive to Charlottesville, Va for wonderful half day at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home.....a real highlight.

Also, if you like that sort of thing, Berkeley and Shirley Plantation homes... also a leisurely half day. They're the two best, and very historic, not to mention beautiful. Then stop at Charles City Tavern for lunch on the way back, right on the highway------highly recommended.

In addition to the excellent restaurant suggestions above, DH and I also
like Food for Thought and Barrett's Seafood.

We love that Marriott...I just picked up a week (off season) with a II AC..can't wait to go back!

Enjoy!

The third week in April is Garden Week in VA. So when you go, most of the fancy gardens should still be in full display. The website for vagardenweek might have some suggestions on gardens to visit.

April 25-28 is the Virginia International Military Tattoo in Norfolk (about an hour) which is a spectacular indoor show featuring bands from the U.S. Military as well as several foreign bands. It's a great patriotic spectacle. The show is at the Scopes Center where, two hours prior, there is a free show put on by the tattoo participants on the plaza outside the arena. Saturday is the NATO festival (Norfolk is NATO HQ in the U.S.) with a morning parade of bands and floats provided by NATO member countries and a day long festival of food, music and exhibits at the seaside park. For information check out http://vafest.org/2013/tattoo.php

Thanks all for the great information. It will help make this a great trip.

Suggestion: To the OP avoid driving to Norfolk,VA west or east bound between the hours of 6:30 AM - 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Monday- Friday....traffic congestion are the worst in Virginia.

No question Hampton/Newport News traffic can be intense but worst in Virginia? As a twice-daily traveler on I-95/395 in Fairfax/Arlington counties, I think not.

Great Place. Traded in there once and then bought Plat week on ebay for $700, thought it was great deal. Then last night I watched a Plat week go for $105 on ebay. Can't wait to go back and try the golf at Ford's Colony.
