Marriott 5 night travel package with 100k miles

As a non enrolled owner in 2018 I traded for a few of the 5 night travel packages. Have not done any more travel packages after that last major devaluation in late 2018.

What I have done is wait for the special Marriott points to United miles promotions. You get better conversion of Marriott points for United miles. Works for me as I usually don't need the 5 or 7 night certificates. Still have 2 left from 2018. If our travel is cancelled in mid June because of covid19, I will have to use them by Jan 31 2021.

... and I have 4 5-night orphaned packages with no where to go.

Thanks guys, that was my recollection as well. Not sure why it specifically says members of the destinations exchange program, oh well. Yep, I have used those promotions as well @frank808 and they do make it a little better.

Have a staycation! That is what I am planning to do if I plans are cancelled. Problem is that I have Cat 5 packages and the cheapest hotel on Oahu is Cat 6. I called to try and upgrade them and pay more points but was not able to.

We don't do staycation because there is no hotel or timeshare resort locally that is more comfortable than our own home. We are spoilt. We have direct view of sunrise every morning and amazing colors of sunset against the mountains in the evening. Then when it is time to go to sleep, our sleep number bed just cuddles us. LOL

With the Bonvoy introduction of peak/off peak, how do these certs work? IE. If I pickup a 5 day package for Cat4 hotel and 100k FF miles....is the Cat4 hotel good for any period?

Yes that is correct. The 5 and 7 day travel certificates are by category. They do not follow perk/offpeak pricing.

5 night packages have been available, to MVCI owners, for a long time. Not sure when they started. As far back as I recall, at least 2000?
The five night packages didn't come along until 2010 or 2011 when Marriott did a huge devaluation of their categories. MVCI came up with these packages that used the previous point amounts for the 7 night package but only gave 5 nights instead.

We never used these packages before we enrolled our weeks, so I don't know about this.

FWIW, I’d go for a Cat 5 or above. I’ve got three Cat 4 (were Cat 6) from the great conversion, expiring 1-31-2021, and pretty useless unless you just need a Fairfield in a city. Though might be more opportunities in Florida and California, close to interesting day trips.

Keep in mind that you do NOT have to use the air miles and hotel stay for the same trip!! Air miles deposited to your airline account and the certificate shows up in Marriott.

I do not own points.
I do have enrolled weeks, but I ordered and used multiple 5 night Travel Packages even before I enrolled any of my weeks so they are definitely available to unenrolled weeks only owners.

Thanks. Generally I would go for a higher category...but I am eyeing the SH near Yellowstone which is Cat 4 and a good 5 day trip...then using the FF to help get me out to HI next year! Missing my Aloha and Yellowstone is on the list for the fam.

If I went this route, I would book the SH with the cert now...to prevent Marriott from changing categories and sticking me with a Cat4 (generally not too great). That’s my potential plan at least!

EDIT: Looks like Marriott increased this hotel from Cat4 to Cat6 just this week, spoiling my idea. Guess I was too slow. Grrrrr...

I was also able to book the 5 night Travel Packages before owning points. I did not see anyone saying the 5 night packages where for DP points owners only.

Looks like Marriott made the decision for you having to get a Cat 6 certificate now. At least you got good advice to get the Cat 6.

I hate this changing category of hotels at anytime. What ever happened to the categories being changed at the beginning of the year only.

Is this perhaps a new policy change?

This is beautiful, and an absolute embaressment to Marriott Vacation Club (they are not really Marriott, they are a Franchisee, using Marriott's name, and calling themselves Marriott). I called Marriott Vacation Club Owner Services, and asked the incompetent fool that I talked to (who was impersonating an MVCI Owner Services Representative) about the 5 night Travel Package. She had no idea what I was talking about, and transferred me to Bonvoy Customer Service. Bonvoy Customer Service had no idea what I was talking about, and transferred me back to MVCI Owner Services. My mistake, I should have called Elvis Presley, and asked him.

We always ordered the 5 night packages from Marriott Rewards (Now Bonvoy). They were able to confirm our ownership and issue the package. There was an issue a few years ago where some non owners were able to get these issued by reps that didn't know better.

I bet you're fun to work with...
