Fort Myers Beach timeshare owners unite to rebuild resort

I love how this Timeshare banded together to rebuild their home away from home...

More than three years after Hurricane Ian devastated parts of Southwest Florida, timeshare owners at Mariner’s Boathouse and Beach Resort on Fort Myers Beach are taking recovery into their own hands. The owners formed a nonprofit, Boathouse Strong, to raise funds and resume reconstruction after the original contractor halted work due to a lack of financing. Their efforts have secured $1 million in flood insurance funds and a new contractor, Modern Services, to complete the project. Temporary occupancy is expected within weeks, with a full reopening targeted by early 2026. Owners say the project’s progress marks a major emotional milestone for the tight-knit community.

Faced with stalled progress, the owners banded together to raise funds and revive the beloved family destination.

Cindy Hemmer, a timeshare owner at Mariner's Boathouse and Beach Resort, expressed the deep connection she and other owners have with the location. "This Fort Myers Beach is paradise for us, and it's all about family," said Hemmer.

The timeshare owners have been unable to access their properties since the hurricane. However, thanks to their collective efforts and the creation of a nonprofit called Boathouse Strong, they have successfully raised money to fund the reconstruction.

Fort Myers changed so much with the hurricane. To me it has lost lots of appeal. It is sad.

Nowhere in this matter is there any mention of VRI / Capital Vacations, which (supposedly) “manages” this property. Where have THEY been during the 3 full years since Hurricane Ian, while continuing to be paid, without interruption, by interval owners at those resorts? Why has there been no input, no public comment and apparently no perceptible or constructive involvement from Capital Vacations there in the past 3 full years?

Same situation and same question for Windward Passage on Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Resort in nearby Bonita Beach. All three resorts are (supposedly) “managed” by VRI / Capital Vacations and all three resorts still remain completely closed today — 3 full years after Hurricane Ian, while virtually all of the other timeshare properties (those still standing at all, anyhow) in that geographic area have long since been repaired and reopened.

Weren’t these once managed by Bluegreen?

Not anytime in the past 20+ years, no. Perhaps sometime before then, decades ago; I don't really know. I believe that all three properties were built sometime in the 1980's or thereabouts, so there may have been other management companies under contract many years ago at one (or more) of those three named resorts.

VRI was (...past tense) a good management company before being "acquired" by Capital Vacations in 2022, but that's certainly no longer the case. Capital Vacations is definitely an operation to be avoided, much like one would seek to avoid a communicable disease, in my personal opinion.

In the mid nineties the predecessor to Bluegreen, RDI. Managed and sold from those three resorts on Fort Myers Beach. I don’t know if they were included when they were bought by Bluegreen in 1998. We got day use when we were on a trip there in 1996

That sentence seems somewhat strange to me. So, apparently, the terms of the Mariner's Boathouse and Beach Resort 's insurance policy COVERED the hurricane losses. And yet, the BOD didn't seek to get those insurance funds. The management company didn't seek to get those insurance funds.

Who on earth doesn't seek to get insurance money to which they're entitled???!!!

So the timeshare OWNERS had to make that request which, apparently, led to their getting a million dollars!!!

Methinks the whole story isn't being told in the above article.
