Lower your Verizon Bill

I did this last week. It required placing a call to them, but it was easy to do (*611 from my cell phone) and it was handled in a couple of minutes. All I had to do was ask for the lower rate promotion. Easy, breezy.

I recently lowered my Verizon rate substantially by switching to T-Mobile.

Exactly. I switched from AT&T and am saving a bundle every month, and have no long term agreement (will never sign one of those again). Remarkably, customer service is much better with T-Mobile as well. And I now get free slow data when abroad. Amazing, more for less...

4 more months under my last contract phone ... til June 4th ... Then $60 per month goes to about $20 per month or less.

Got nothing off after calling .. just is letting me focus on the END of my LAST 2 year phone contract with Verizon ...

Used to have 3 land lines and 2 contract cell phones ... sorry, guys. The world has changed and you did NOT adapt.

Verizon vs T-Mobile

I have Verizon and hubby has T-Mobile. We both have iPhones. He does have international service in some areas. Recently, he had it in Barbados but not in the Bahamas. I have no international. However, I don't have to pay full retail for an iPhone. And I have more coverage, phone and internet and stronger signal strength most of the time. He's content given the price he pays. Don't think I would be given how often I like to get a new phone.

You're lucky to have such a good experience. In my area, Verizon has coverage everywhere, but T-Mobile is sketchy at best. A good friend has T-Mobile, and has to keep a land line at her home, because her cell phone gets virtually no reception at her house. I've tried to talk her into switching to Verizon (I get five bars of coverage at her home) but she says her husband won't do it - he likes the savings they get with T-Mobile. When I ask about poor coverage and the extra cost of the land line they need to keep, she makes a face and goes like this:  Her husband is frugal, but sometimes can't see the forest for the trees. :)

Obviously converge is dependent on your location. However, T-Mobile offers wifi calling (if your phone supports it) so when you're at a wifi network you may call using that rather than the towers. This feature helps with better coverage at home, but won't help when you're out.

You may check pricing and availability of T-Mobile service in other countries here:

As for "pay full retail for an iPhone" don't kid yourself. You're paying for the phone one way or another, either up front or over time. As for upgrades, I've sold my old iPhone and bought new, and suspect that's what I'll do when there's a worthwhile upgrade available again.

Yes, you're right. It's a psychological marketing trick that allows me to get the new phone every two years not having to put nearly $900 on my credit card at once or sign to make new installments. I think I'm just signing to renew a contract at what I've been paying for my plan for a very long time which in reality is more than T-Mobile's service. A savings which would cover the cost of the phone. However, there's still the fact that I prefer having service. And so far, except for international, I have it more often than he. When, if, T-Mobile's coverage and signal/internet strength equals or surpasses that of Verizon I might consider it. I suspect by then, Verizon will become more competitive in pricing.

Thanks for sharing all this informative information.

I think I could have written this post. :D

We have Verizon as they supposedly have the best coverage where we are. Just completed a two year contract and most likely will go into another contract when we decide to upgrade (waiting for the Samsung Galaxy 6 to come out in a couple of months).

I could change the rate plan and save $10/month, but I would lose our current plan. Since I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing, I'm doing nothing. I did reduce out bill by dropping one dd (she got married) and decreasing our data since we were coming nowhere close to what we were paying for.

I care more about coverage than "customer service", and Verizon is unsurpassed in coverage. It's not even close. That said, I've never experienced anything negative with Verizon's customer service, either, and I've had a couple of minor issues over the years. They were dealt with immediately and completely, and the reps were easy to reach and always followed up afterward to check on me. Our family has 4 lines and we are all happy. IMHO, Verizon excels in coverage AND customer service. Any cost difference is more than justified.

I used to say this about Verizon until I moved back to AT&T in 2007. And then I said it about AT&T until I moved to T-Mobile last year. At the time the reviews from friends and colleagues were very positive about TM and not so much about the others. Of course, this changes over time.

And, obviously, coverage is often the most important criteria.

I used to work for AT&T. I thought their customer service was atrocious. We dropped them when we moved. Coverage in New Mexico with AT&T is horrible. Also, since there is no AT&T presence in New Mexico I had no retiree benefits as far as landline service, and no cell phone discount after retiring. So I had NO incentive to stick with AT&T.

I've found Verizon customer service to be so-so. Actually when I've talked to someone on the phone or face to face in one of their "real" stores, it's been fine. But I find the website difficult to navigate.

I went to T-mobile because we are about to go to Europe for a year, and the free texting and free but slow data while roaming and 20 cent-per-minute roaming and free-calls-when-on-wifi had a lot to do with that choice.

But otherwise, not being a phone phanatic, I'd look seriously at republic wireless or ting or Wal-mart's offerings.

Be careful you don't use the service abroad every day for a long time without returning to the States. Check their site and reviews for details, but the service abroad is not meant to be used continuously for months on end.

I agree with virtual carriers being a consideration, but given TM's price (my cost is currently an average of ~$28/mth per line for unlimited call, text and 2.5GB plus the international benefits) I think it would be very hard to find a lower rate for similar service.

Thanks! I just saved more than a year's TUG membership--$16--with 30% off my iPhone (-$12 month) and 10% off DH iPhone (-$4 month). Plus the rep had a bonus 1GB of data to give me for a year, free.
As for other carriers, Verizon has the best coverage in my area and I won't switch.

I've looked at changing my plan as well. Each time i do Verizon Customer Services ends up telling me that I would get less for more money. So I hang on to the plan I've had for many years even though the four lines I share with family and friend, one smart phone and three that are not, don't use nearly all the minutes talk or all the texts. Go figure!

Based off the advice on this thread, we called Verizon and asked them to review our bill and get it down as cheap as possible. We ended up with the MORE unlimited talk (used to be 700 min) and 10GB of data (an increase of 4GB) and our recent bill that came yesterday showed a price drop to $205 for us. That's a savings of $60/month.

Thanks!

Hey, that's enough savings to pay for another timeshare MF! ;)

Yes, I lowered my Verizon bill, too.... I moved my one number off contract to Tracfone. The left behind contract number has weeks to go ... then it become a pre-paid minute number ... maybe.
