I think a lot of it has to do with name and recognition and history.

Louis Vuitton is (I believe still) the number 1 replicated/faked designer brand in the world.

Since the beginning of the company they have maintained a "snobbish elegance". It was Louis Vuitton trunks that went down with the Titanic for example.

But they also have a high reputation for quality and craftsmanship.

When I spoke with the woman on the phone, she said she had had her Speedy 30 for 28 years. It is a classic design that has never gone out of style.

The purses are made in either France, the USA, Italy or Spain, by craftspeople.

Are they worth so much more than a Target purse? I don't know, I guess that's up to each person to decide.

For me it's the idea of getting Cora something special or unique. Even if her friends walk around with faked designer bags, she can have the quiet confidence and assurance that hers is the real deal. She's not the type that would ever discuss it unless asked.

But since everything from Louis Vuitton (in our price range - a lot of the higher priced stuff is available - but not for our budget) seems unavailable, I have to come up with another plan and am leaning towards an iPhone 4....Maybe I can surprise her and put it in a purse from Wally World! :D

Rick,

If you still would like to buy Cora a Louis Vuitton handbag - you probably know this but here's a website listing Louis Vuitton locations in California, Nevada and Arizona - I think the Louis Vuitton store in City Center, Las Vegas has the bag you want in stock - I would give them a call to verify that and have it shipped to you- or go to Vegas for a get-away and pick it up.

Thank you Richard.

I hadn't thought of the Vegas City Center location.

We will be in Vegas the weekend of the 17th, so perhaps I will check it out. :)

Oh boy, this is really a sore spot with me. I HATE the show-off materialism of the middle-schoolers and high schoolers...DD was teased b/c of not having the "right" brands and then got in big trouble for inappropriately reacting to one of the girls who was teasing her. I sat outside the school several afternoons at dismissal and did a rough count of UGGs and Coach bags - it was probably around 25-30% We got her a knock-off, and then I later got her a Coach purse for her birthday at the outlet with a coupon so the price wasn't bad. Immediately the next day she got all these "ooohhh, I just looooove your bag" comments. Ridiculous. Nonetheless, she has chosen to spend birthday and holiday money on Coach and UGG.

No wonder I don't care for Coach anymore--they are catering to a much different age group. :D This is amazing that in this economy kids (and their parents) can afford this. I know--peer pressure. But sheesh, wish we could teach them to put the money in the bank and retire at 35 or so like Clark Howard. I know, I need to get real.

I tend to use the same bag day after day. I purchased a Michael Kors bag which was pricey but looks like new because of the craftmanship and materials. I have friends that have LV's that they use every day and they look like new after years of wear. I have one evening LV which, of course, looks like new as I don't wear it much. Linda

Rick: I would recommend going with a LV bag. While they are costly, the quality and craftmanship is superb. I have had mine for years, use them often and love them. (In the past, I've called the NYC store and they have located the purse that I want and shipped it to me - although that's not as much fun as going in the LV store. :) ) Good luck!

You are a thoughtful DH and your gift will probably be enjoyed for many many years. I bought a LV for myself as a treat for a milestone in my life - I will always treasure it and it will never go out of style. I have always loved Coach bags and many designs are timeless. The designer bags last forever for me and continue to remain in style and show little wear and tear. Some trendy cheaper bags I've purchased have been fun but they tend to have a shorter lifetime so sometimes it pays off to invest in something in something I know I will love for years and years.

I hope Cora is going with you - the whole "experience" of buyig the bag in Paris was wonderful - they sure know how to treat their customers!
