This depends on how often you plan to visit Disney World, what size accommodation you would need, and what times of the year you want to visit. The Disney Information Station maintains a DVC Point Calculator and a DVC Point Chart. I suggest that you enter in some sample information, based on what type of vacation habits you have, to find out how many points would be appropriate for you.
Many ask if Disney Vacation Club will change the point requirement for a stay at a DVC resort. While the total number of points sold at the resort is a fixed number and cannot be changed, point needs for stays can be changed. However, if points needed for some nights (or room types) are raised, other nights (or room types) must be lowered, as the total points required to stay at the resort for the year cannot be changed. This has occurred only once, in 1996 at OKW, and is likely to happen only if necessary to keep resort utilization in balance for the benefit of DVC members. At that time some nights were raised a few points, some were lowered a few points and most were not changed at all.

Actually the latest point reallocation was for the 2011 use year. Points reallocation has happened in 2010 and 2011. But there was no reallocation for 2012.

Thanks for the info. I will be going to check out the mouseowners site as well. To answer what I might be looking for in accommondations and visit timeframes. My wife and 5 children have been going to disney with people from my family for the past 4 years. I have yet to be there. I figure we will be looking for a 2 bedroom suite at least for the 7 of us. I almost bought into BLT last summer but did not. Looking for possible mothersday timefram, Christmass week. We have a tough time breaking free from Sept. to early December. thanks for the help and have a Great day all.

I would call Seth Nock for DVC. I feel I got a better deal on my 250 points going through Seth. A simple Google search will find him easily, and he is a TUG member and real estate broker.

Although DVC prices have dropped in the past few years, it's unlikely that you would get a real "steal" as Disney has a Right Of First Refusal, and they do exercise it. The resort where they'd be most likely to let something go really cheaply is Vero Beach, but the annual fees there are high. Also, nothing in the Disney contract provides a permanent right to book into the other Disney resorts, so you should only buy at a Disney resort where you'd be happy staying. Probably few people would be happy if they could only stay at Vero Beach.

If you're looking for prime weeks like Christmas, you probably need to buy where you want to stay.
You should also look at the costs. For instance, a 2BR at Christmas at Old Key West (probably the only resort where 7 people would be "comfortable") is 398 points. A 400 point contract there would probably cost at least $50 per point to purchase and $5 per point (for now, but increasing every year) in maintenance fees., so $20k upfront and $2k per year. If you spread your upfront costs over 10 years, that's basically $4k per year for the next 10 years (upfront costs plus maintenance fees). Is it worth that to you? That's nearly $600/night.

listen to what micheal is talking about. that a boat load of buck to spend on disney time for sure.. I know it sounds tempting to jump on the disney bandwagon. If money is not that big a deal then jump.. if it is, like a lot of us here on tug , then you might look at wyndham points at bonnet creek. same benefits as DVC, (on the property, use of buses etc. ) in some regards and a whole lot less moola...

The only guarantee is that you book your home resort. However, I sincerely doubt that they would remove the book another resort at the 7 month margin.
there are lots of things that are not guaranteed that DVC has done - no guarantee of discounts for Annual Passes or merchandise, no guarantee of free transportation, no guarantee for continued Magical Express. I think that it is highly unlikely that they will be discontinuing any of these things because I believe it must be beneficial to their business model.

I have had my points since 1994. I decided on the number of points that I purchased in exactly the same way that has been suggested. I took the week that I wanted (first week of October - low season when I purchased), the type of unit I wanted to be able to book (3 BR Grand Villa) and how often that I anticipated wanting to go (approximately every 2 years).
That worked great until they instituted Food and Wine - which I do not like and which has made the formerly generally undesirable time that I liked at WDW into a fairly popular time. I still resent Food and Wine for interfering with my time.
We now book May or September instead of October and I do not like either one as well as they are both too hot. October was perfect, warm enough to swim, cool enough to not melt.
You never know how things will change - even those things that you don't anticipate.
The great thing is that the DVC point system is so flexible, you can still work around those changes.

I would try early May or even late April (at least a week after Easter, to avoid the crowds). It's even slower and the weather should be comparable to early October. Early November might be good, too. F&W should be winding down by then.
speaking of early-to-mid may, when do the love bugs usually show up at wdw?
