 We spent 2 weeks last October at the new Royal Haciendas and visited downtown Playa a few times. They have "tons" of restaurants but it was confusing which ones could be good!!! The ones we tried were only FAIR. Since returning, I have been researching reviews for the "GOOD ONES". So far, it looks like Yaxche, Dr. Taco, Carboncitos and Babe's Noodles may be good ones? Anyone out there tried these and your thoughts? Do they also accept credit cards and are they air conditioned. But most of all looking for reasonable prices, casual, but good food and service?? We tried to get in Babe's Noodles and it was always full (limited seating) and even though it was not air conditioned and did not accept credit cards, it must have been good because it was always full with people waiting to get seated!! Any other recommendations?

www.playa.info has a forum that addresses these and many more Playa issues.

for example,
http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carmen-forum/33643-top-5-playa-restaurants-bars.html

"I think 1 serious MUST has not been mentioned so far.....DR TACOS.....its a have to on our list.
HC Monteray (Super Carnes) - for arrachera
Cockteleria Veracruz (10th Ave y 1 St sur) - for ceviche/prawn cocktail
La Cuervo del Chango - for sure breakfast, dinner yummy also.
la Pesca or La Bamba Jarocha - for seafood"

We never miss going to Yaxche when visiting PDC. You might also enjoy Alux. Alux (pronounced Aloosh) Bar and Restaurant is an amazing place that is built underground inside a large cenote (cave/cavern). Have never eaten there. (I am told the food is OK, not great). Just gone for drinks and appetizers and to see the place. It is amazing. It is located outside of the downtown area, on Avenue Juarez, just few short blocks west of Highway 301. You would be best to take a taxi from downtown to get there, if you are not driving. .

I would be a little nervous about using a credit card and would pick one with good fraud protection. There have been some problems in Cancun, notably at Carlos & Charlies a few years ago and I also know someone who had a problem at Walmart. It may not be any worse than here, but being out of US jurisdiction may be tempting.

I highly recommend John Gray's Kitchen. We first stumbled upon his sister restaurant, John Gray's Place, in Puerto Morelos, and fell in love with everything about the restaurant. We've eaten several times in Puerto Morelos, and ate once at his restaurant in Playa del Carmen. Do a Google search, and you'll find all kinds of great reviews of his restaurants!!
