Locking the pool areas during rain when lightning is “nearby”

When I moved to Central Florida in 1983 (I was 10.5), there were no warnings at golf courses or hotel/resort pools. During the summer storm season (June - November), there were at least one golfer per week who was struck by lightning on the course. Just think about it, there usually aren't many trees on a golf course so a golfer is the tallest thing in the area. Plus, they have a long stick usually made of iron. Since most courses installed the lightning warning sirens, the golfing death rate has fallen, most golfers are smart enough to heed the warnings. Now that we also have weather apps that will show where the thunderstorms are and lightning counts, there is no excuse for a golfer to be on a course when rain is nearby.

This video mentions lightning storms, but is all about living in Florida!

Lakeshore has text notification for the pool opening and closing, but you have to request it. They will also personally call you if you prefer.

Front desk never called me when pools reopened even though I was assured I would be. Luckily another tugger told me the pools reopened .

Sounds like a good guy!

I think they should keep the pool open during lightning strikes for those that want to use it as a shortcut, and have 1 irons available to carry for those making the walk.

I am really curious though, before these systems, how many people were hit by lightning at a timeshare resort? Most people don't want to be hit by lightning and the sound of thunder usually sends them out of the pool.

Perhaps i should be embarrassed to admit this, but getting out of the pool might not come to me automatically. Growing up and living my whole life in Ca, where lightning storms are rare. The few we do get are usually in the winter, not a swimming season. Of course we are taught to avoid lightning, but there is also a certain draw to watch it its so uncommon...

It wasn't until I started traveling to Singapore for work that i regularly saw lightning and thought about it enough to realize you need to get out of a pool.. I am sure if i had lived someplace with regular summer storms, with swimmers or golfers getting struck that it would become automatic to take cover.
