Our passports expire in February. If we renew them in July we may be 2 of the @30000 who are issued one of the special ones that have a portrait of the president with his signature in gold and designed to honor our country's 250th birthday. Might there be an extra charge for those in addition to the basic fee?

From what I read in the article I saw, there wouldn't be an extra charge but they are only limited based on available books and only be available at the Washington Passport Agency. I think most mailed in applications go to Texas and Philadelphia. Is that also where they are produced? Where are online passport applications processed? I suspect you might have to apply in person at the Washington Passport Agency to get the new design.

My attempts to renew my passport online this morning failed following numerous different photo submissions. DH is going to try to retake our photos as soon as the gloomy gray skies here are gone so we have better lighting. If worse comes to worse, CVS total fee for passport photo + digital=$20.99.

My passport photo from CVS is horrible but it was accepted. It's washed out so I look like Casper the ghost, but facial recognition works every time.

Whether you agree or disagree with the new limited edition passport book, the OP asked a legitimate question in the appropriate forum as in how they might be able to obtain one. No need to take it down the political path. You all know better.

I am not touching the political comments.

According to our local news this morning, you will need to apply in person at the Washington passport office to receive the special pages. It does not sound like you will receive one of these if you just renew via the normal process.

Another article I read indicated only 30,000-40,000 are even available. Making sense that it would only be through one regional office. Apparently they won't even be available until closer to the 4th of July.

guess the rest of the internet was closed today for people to argue about politics for no good reason

I am what passes for a Moderator on our local Nextdoor site, people can always find a reason to argue about politics or somehow bring national politics to a local issue.. ..

When we renewed our passports on line I took the photos against our light cream colored wall. You can’t wear glasses. My husband and I look like criminals in a mug shot. I didn’t care. They were accepted and we got the passports in like 2 weeks or so.

I look forward to the day when they embed chips in our necks.
Then we won't have to carry docs at all.

And hope you get the one for you and not the one intended for the dog.

With facial recognition I doubt we even need chips.

What about for identical twins? I always wonder how that works with facial recognition in current situations that use it.

I am sure there's been testing on it and perhaps some false positives show up, but I would think there is enough of a difference that the system could detect the difference. Apparently Microsoft Hello does fairly well.

If you belong to AAA I think the passport photos are free.
Please check I could be wrong.

Unfortunately we don't.
Still working on getting our photos to meet criteria. Friends have successfully taken theirs by standing in the shower....mostly clothed and water off!

Walgreen does passports photos and is cheaper.
I still would check AAA for their passport photos costs.

Success!
Returned from a trip to Wyndham National Harbor and beyond so decided to tackle the passport renewal yesterday. The photo of me in front of a white poster board that DH had taken of me before we left home was acceptable! The poster board was too small to work as a background for him so I encouraged him to step into the shower and I'd take his picture. He saw faults in it such as a faint shadow and was sure it wouldn't pass criteria. But nothing ventured nothing gained because only by submitting it would we know whether it needed to be retaken.
Surprise, surprise!
Both passports are projected to arrive by June's end!

AAA does charge members for passport photos, but members get a discount.

Update!
So on checking my email this morning, there's one from the passport office saying they'd emailed or snail mailed me yesterday requesting additional information. No email from them in Spam or elsewhere. And no snail mail yet. Grrr!

Instructions say to contact them by phone if nothing has been received in a week which I suspect will be the case.

I've had a US passport for 30 years so I have no idea what more the U.S. Passport agency might need from me now to prove I am a U.S. citizen!
Also have global entry.

What about proof of name changes, e.g. marriage certificate if your current last name is different from your birth last name? I wonder if they’re getting more persnickety about that. But I can’t remember whether I had to submit mine when I applied for a passport some years after marriage.
