The Lexmark inkjet printers I had were always big ink hogs. I never was really fond of them, put they did what they were meant to do. They just didn't print cheaply.

Rick, you are so right. We have a Lexmark 3400, and it inhales ink, which is very pricey. I guess I'll be looking for a new printer soon.

As most of my printing is b/w, I found a relatively inexpensive Brother all-in-one b/w laser printer. The toner carts are expensive (much cheaper thru Amazon), but they last forever. I just wish I had done it years ago!

When this ink jet bites the dust, I'm going to invest in a color laser printer.

I now have two Cannon printers and I am able to get compatible ink cartridges from Amazon. What I like about the Cannon is it uses individual color cartridges so I only change out what's needed.

IJ printers became disposables long ago. Look at the cost of a set of replacement print cartridges, then compare with a new printer. A new printer that happens to include a full set of cartridges. No brainier.

HP also uses individual carts, but it seems I was always buying one. I use the Costco refills...half the price of new carts through Office Depot and the like. I've thought about buying the refill kits online, however, now with the laser printer, I don't buy ink jet carts very often and the Costco refills are so convenient.

With laser printers prices so reasonable now, I may look at a color laser printer when I need a new printer.

One of my first printers ever was an Okidata (not even sure if they are around anymore) and it was a laser quality printer, but not a laser printer, (I just don't remember the technology). It was a great printer till it died and then replacement costs were quite high.

Heck, I recall my first printer was a tractor feed, 9 pin printer. I think it may have taken a ribbon! Then came 'letter quality' 24 pin- still tractor feed. I DID own one Lexmark. That was enough to learn me about them. No more.

We are still limping along with a HP inkjet that's down to about one color- blue, I think. I am planning on getting a wi-fi Brother monochrome, because the vast majority of printing tasks at home are things like travel documents, itineraries, boarding passes and the like. If I want high quality photo printing, I just email it over to Costco, Wally World or Walgreens in the neighborhood.
