I posted this on avsforum.com, but haven't gotten any replies, thought I've give TUG a try.

I need to mount a custom bracket to a Sony 40" lcd tv. I believe the 4 mounting holes on the back of the set are a standardized size, but I can't find the exact screw size mentioned anywhere. Does anyone know the size? Thanks.

They are usually a metric size, typically M5, but it depends on the size and weight of the TV. Also, you can't use screws that are too long, or you may run into something inside the TV.

Best plan is to look in (or download) the manual; it will probably tell you what to use. If not, buy a couple of screws ... maybe an M5 and an M6... at the hardware store to try. Maybe about 15 mm long ... depends also on the thickness of the mounting plate. In each hole, there's a threaded bushing that's connected to (hopefully) a metal plate on the inside of the plastic case. You want a screw that's long enough to just reach to the far end of the bushing, so that you're distributing the load over as much metal as possible.

I mounted our 60-pound TV with the specified four tiny-looking screws. I couldn't believe they'd support that load, but it's still up a year later, even after a couple of minor earthquakes.

There's nothing in the manual that specifies the size.

I don't have any weight issues. The tv sits on on it's stand, I'm going to be mounting a 48" metal bar to 2 of the mounting screws, so that L & R speaker flanking the tv can be mounted to it, to get them closer to the center of the screen. I just want to make sure I don't get the wrong size screw, and possible damage the mounting holes.

Jeff,

Are these the screws you need?

Richard

No. That section of the directions is for permanent security of the base of the tv to a horizontal surface (does anyone do that?). The section that applies to me:

When Mounting on a Wall See the Instruction Guide supplied with the wall-mount bracket on how to mount the unit on the wall.

as you can see, provides no specs at all. I'm starting to wonder if it's almost intential - the TV companies want you to always use a 'mounting kit' (hopefully engineered to properly handle the load), vs providing the details that might allow you to put together your own mounting.

I just bought a Panasonic flat panel, and the 4 screws used to mount it to it's pedestal are M5x25 (per the manual). I would presume these screws would also be used for a wall mount, although I didn't look at the back of the set to confirm this.
