Didn't Limoncello used to be located in La Isla?
I think it has always been next to Lorenzillo's as a I remember rolling by on the bus, but I could be wrong as most of our 20+ stays in Cancun have been at our all-inclusive resort so no need to eat out.

There have been a number of Italian places that have come and gone over the years in La Isla, plus COVID put the nail in the coffin of a couple that were there recently.

Perhaps I am thinking of something else. What is the place people go to at La Isla that overlooks the aquarium? Popular for breakfast.

Was just there in January and used the Cornershop app (by Uber) for grocery delivery. You can order from all the major chains including Soriana, Selecto and Costco right from the app (food and alcohol). A shopper shops your order and delivers right to the resort. Worked well and allowed us to maximize pool time not having to do a grocery run.

This is a great thread. Thanks to all the contributors. One thing that I haven't seen discussed that I have a question about; what is others experience and recommendations on excursion companies to Chichen Itza?

We booked a trip through USA Transfers before and also through Cancun-Discounts. Both were fine and you end up with a local tour company. They will pick you up at the resort and shuttle you to a central location to catch the larger bus with other people that were shuttled in. You can also talk to the concierge about tours, but we have found them to be pretty expensive. Though if you sign up for a timeshare presentation you may be able to get some discounts that bring them in line with the others that you can book online. There are really so many options that you can find by just Google searching "Chichen Itza Tours". I am not sure that any one is better than another.

We hired a private guide (www.cancunmanny.com) and arrived at Chichen Itza when it opened -- maybe an hour ahead of the tour group buses. This is a not-to-be-missed world-class site and much better when you have the place to yourself.

^^^ This. We booked a private tour through USA Transfers and went there during the Mayan end of time (12/21/12). We hired a local guide to take us around Chichen Itza and then our tour guy took us to really cool small private lunch place with beautiful gardens. I'd never do a big bus tour again after that.

We've also done Akumal (swimming with sea turtles) and stopped in Playa Del Carmen and Puerto Morelos on the way back, and our driver gave us the guided tour and history lesson.

It's pricey but worth every penny as you can make some on-the-fly decisions.

Couple of additional points based on our very recent experience. Baby Lobster was very good. What left a bad taste in my mouth was they hid the fact that they added a 20% gratuity in the final bill so essentially I tipped twice. I completely understand that all hospitality folks have hurt due to Covid closures and lack of tourists and I was extremely generous with all our servers. Just don't pull a fast one on me. The Thai restaurant in La Isla in the high end section is the place to watch a sunset. You are seated in overwater "bungalows". Sonora Grill at Las Isla on the entertainment section side had great steaks and cocktails. Plenty of chips with amazing and HOT salsas comp to start and cute little gelato cones given to you with the bill. Chianti at Hotel Nyx was very very good. The concierge at the Westin has a list of preferred restaurants that either give you 10-15% off, free welcome cocktail or free appetizer. We walked to all the restaurants and did not run out of places to eat. That is truly what makes Lagunamar so perfectly located. Both when I was there in November and again last week, the beach is so well maintained. Hardly any seaweed at all and the water was warm and clear. Already have my 2 weeks next Jan/Feb booked!

We are going to Westin in April, only been to the resort once when it opened.
I had a few questions: Thank you in advance (I am a planner, so excuse all the questions)!!!

1. Do I need Covid test prior to arrival? I am vaxed w/booster.
2. We will be using an airport transfer and won't have a car. What is the best place for groceries/beer, that is reasonable to get too? Normally, we like Costco, but seems far from Westin and we don't have a car.
3. Are the beach lounge chairs, free and easy to get one ?
4. What is the best building (s) for Oceanview ?
5. We are 5 star elite owners, are there any benefits for elite owners?
6. What is the best/easy place for the Covid test for return to US? Cost ?

I really appreciate your feedback!

To your questions
1. No. Mexico is open to all - no test or vaccination requirement.
2. See my comment above about grocery delivery via the Cornershop app. You can get Costco through the app. If you don’t want delivery then Soriana is your best walkable option (10 mins)
3. Yes, free and there are plenty.
4. All buildings are ocean view. Better views on higher floors (4th floor or higher). Look at the resort map online to see what building you’d prefer and request that.
5. I’m not elite so someone else will need to answer.
6. At the resort. Concierge will reach out before you arrive to schedule the test. Assuming requirements are the same in April as that are today you’ll need to schedule for the day before you depart. Cost is ~$23 USD per person charged to your room. Tip the guy doing your test and you’ll get a negative result.

Any building recommendations?

Depending on Covid status when we visit things may change, but as of now we’d rather avoid public transportation and prefer to eat outdoors. What’s your favorite places with outdoor dining that we can walk to?

I know the previous poster had quipped about tipping the person administering the Covid test for a negative result. Is that really the case? Is that testing at the resort? Didn’t know tipping was customary for that; what’s recommended? No one tipped at the testing site in Aruba

What is the kitchen setup? And can you bring food into Cancun? I read conflicting info.

Thanks

We’ve been to Lagunamar 4 times since March 2020. None of us in our party contracted COVID. Mexico is as safe as your vigilance and they do a great job mitigating COVID. In many cases their protocols are more stringent than places in the US. We’ve never tipped the testers, they’ve always all been negative. With that said, I would pass on places like Coco Bongo and crowded beaches like the one behind Mandala.

Public transportation is just fine. Wear your mask, wash your hands or hand sanitize after the ride and just be sensible. Most, if not many, restaurants have outdoor seating, including establishments in La Isla across the street. Go enjoy and turn off the television….

Kitchen depends on the unit. 1BR has a full kitchen with convection microwave, studio has smaller kitchen, fewer stove burners and a smaller fridge. Same convection microwave. Neither have actual ovens. You can bring food into Mexico. Same rules as US - no meat, vegetables or plants and declare them. Canned items, pasta, chips, all fine but honestly the Chedraui or Soriana is cheap. Cancún is not like Hawaii or Caribbean islands pricing. It may even be cheaper to not bring food and go to the store there.

In my opinion building 1, 9 and 14 have the best view to the sea, and the worst is 13, it is closed of air conditioner machines of next resort (Aqua) and are too noisy

Is it best to call ahead to request a building preference? If so how many days ahead of arrival (14/21 etc)?

Building 12 also has the AC noise from the resort next door. You can also get an Antigen across the street at La Isla. When your concierge emails you about transportation options you can request the building you want from him/her - that has worked well for us. We found the prices for food very reasonable compared to Canada.

The difference with 12 is that all of the balconies face in toward the pool/resort. The balconies of 13 overlook the Live Aqua next door and you have a lot of AC noise while on the balcony and some of the lower floors look out into the foliage vs having great views of the resort and ocean. Building 2 also has rooms on the end that overlook the parking lot.

In many cases their protocols are more stringent than places in the US. We’ve never tipped the testers, they’ve always all been negative.

I also found the protocols to be better than at home in the US, both at the resort and the nearby restaurants. Mask adherence while indoors was high and all the employees at Lagunamar are required to be vaccinated in order to have returned to work. My quip re: tip and you’ll test negative was based on my experience.

At the time of your test you go to the concierge desk where a security guard meets you and escorts you to a ground floor studio room in building 10 where the tests are conducted. Lagunamar has contracted this out to a local medical clinic and there are two people in the room; one medical professional who administers the test and one clerical staff who inputs the results into the computer and prints your paperwork to give to the airline.

When we walked into the room there was a big cardboard box on the coffee table with TIPS APPRECIATED written on the side. While everyone in our family (5 of us) has been vaccinated I was nervous that we’d have an asymptomatic positive as we were there at the peak of omicron (mid Jan for 8 days). I didn’t think I had brought any cash, as we had just come from the pool, but I dug through my bag and found a $5 bill which I promptly and obviously put in the box. He then “swabbed” our nose and I say swabbed loosely b/c I’m not sure the cotton swab even went in our noses. After getting all 5 of us – including my 10, 8 and 5 yo kids – he told us to “wait 5 mins for the results to come back.” Within 30 seconds of saying that he gave us 2 thumbs up and said “ok, good news, all negative.” We tested when we returned home just to be safe before returning to work and school and we were all negative – so maybe the test was legit, it just seemed like the tip helped to ensure the results. My 10 and 8 yo even said walking out of the testing room, “why can’t they do the tests like that at home?” “He barely even touched my nose, at home they go almost to my brain.”

we just had our tests today, I didn’t see the tip box…
Our tests went exactly like you said, the tech poked our nose for less than 1 sec (thou he did go in pretty far), the computer guy printed out the negative report before the tech give him the thumbs up 45 secs later…the longest part was the computer guy typing in all of our info from our passport…I did leave the tip on his desk after.

Was just there in January and used the Cornershop app (by Uber) for grocery delivery. Worked well and allowed us to maximize pool time not having to do a grocery run.

Where did the Cornershop delivery driver drop your order off at? Did you have to meet them outside the gate or in the lobby?

Yes lower circle, PB level. You should get a notification on your phone when they are a couple mins away. If you have a lot of groceries the bellman will help bring it to your room.
