Like many, I have had to cancel travel plans due to C-19. I am not making any reservations yet, but I have just thought about dates and looked at availability in the system.

I was wondering if anyone has stayed in a studio at both the Westin Lagunamar and The Westin Resort and Spa Cancun. If so, which would you prefer based on the accommodations (differences in the room), the accessibility to and quality of amenties, view, crowds, etc?

I have not stayed at the Westin Cancun, but have stayed at Lagunamar.

Lagunamar is a beautiful resort. Very close to restaurants and shopping. The one aspect of the Westin Cancun that I have read that people like is the ocean is calmer.

If I were to go again, I would pick Lagunamar.

Can't beat the location of LagunaMar! Every room has an ocean view. The room layouts will be very similar, but the amenities at Lagunamar are much better. From Lagunamar you can walk to most shopping and restaurants, or short bus rides. Cancun Resort and Spa is at the bottom of the strip so requires longer transportation to shopping and restaurants.

We always stay and Love Westin Lagunamar! We try to go every other year.

I too have only stayed at the Westin Lagunamar. I believe the Westin Cancun was totally remodeled and is made up of studio, two and three br villas. Had a friend stay there with his family and he said it was very nice. It is located at the beginning of the hotel zone. You can swim in the ocean or snorkel in the lagoon. Other amenities (restaurants, stores, etc) are sparse and you may need to take the bus or taxi, if you don't have a car, to get anywhere.

We had a long-delayed Westin timeshare spiel getaway booked for Lagunamar over my May 11th birthday, which we've gone ahead and canceled. Srsly, we were so happy to get this long weekend; we purchased this thing in, like, late summer 2017...right before my broken hip, and my sabbatical, and other travel booked for 2019...so we were already pushing it with Westin to be able to use it.

They were gracious about it. Luckily, we'd been waiting to purchase airfare, so that wasn't an issue. Hoping to go now around our anniversary in October. *crosses fingers*

Count me as another that votes for Lagunamar. We toured the Westin last year while staying at Lagunamar and here are my thoughts (much repeats what's been said above):

  • Lagunamar Studios are technically 14sq ft smaller than the Westin, but the Lagunamar was purpose built to be a timeshare so I find the layout much better and the room actually feels larger at Lagunamar. Also, ALL rooms at Lagunamar are oceanside (I understand some at the Westin face the lagoon).
  • We did really like the decor at the Westin - very FL beach cottage vibe. Lagunamar is pretty standard (nice) and nondescript.
  • The amenities at Lagunamar are far superior. Way more pool space, loungers...etc.
  • The location of Lagunamar is much better, with many restaurants and other facilities within easy walking distance.
  • Westin sits on a calmer section of the beach and is more compact.
Either way, you can't go "wrong" but I think Lagunamar is hard to beat.

For those that do not know, Lagunamar is going to do a soft remodeling of the units:
white kitchen cabinets, new decorations, new couches, headboards etc. The bathrooms stay the same, the same tile in the kitchen. Overall a fresh look. They hired a US design company and the board is in the process of approving the changes. I think they were going to start to update the units in 2021 but I do not know if the current situation will delay or advance the work. If they have a lot of rooms empty for a while, even after the restrictions are lifted, they may start the work sooner

Like others above, both won’t disappoint. However Lagunamar is just so hard to beat. The pools, rooms, and especially the location are superior to the Westin Cancun. Westin Cancun has a great beach but after staying in both several times, next trip we are just doing WLR.

Also the 1 BR sliding doors to the bedroom are painted white. I saw them in January and it looked nice. Building 10. Not sure what floor.

No. As far as I could tell it was just one floor and one building. Again I think it was number 10 and I think fourth floor. Not sure if floor is right.
