We are owners a KoOlina.

Our week, later next month, starts from Sat and ends 1 week later.

We will be arriving by plane from Canada on Friday evening (7 PM), and leaving 1 week later (leaves after 8:30 PM).

We have booked one night to stay at Hawaiian Village Hilton Hotel.

The question is whether we should rent a car at the airport for a week; or take a taxi to the hotel, and rent a car late morning/early afternoon (which means we would still have to rent the car for "7" days), or take a taxi to KoOlina and rent a car for 6 days (from Sat evening).

What are the taxi rates from the airport to downtown Honolulu, and from downtown Honolulu to KoOlina.

The reason I am not enthusiastic about renting the car the first night - I save the time in renting/picking up the car (ie My family and I have perhaps another hour at the Hawaiian Village Hilton hotel to enjoy ourselves), I save in parking costs.

You might want to consider a shuttle to/from the Hilton. It's been awhile since I've stayed in Waikiki but I recall you could get a shuttle from the airport for a reasonable price. Then just return to the airport on Sat and pick up your rental car.

However you'll definitely want a car for the drive to Ko'Olina. I think a taxi is $80-90 and that's if the traffic is decent. I've been stuck in traffic a couple of times headed towards Ko'Olina and it can be a mess. Besides if you have a car you can stop on the way and pick up food at Costco (or Target).

I think you can rent at the JW Marriott (Hertz or Avis?) but I'm sure the rates are higher than at the airport. Might as well just get a car at the airport and forget about a taxi to Ko'Olina.

When I need a rental car for Oahu I usually find the best deals on Costco travel using Alamo. Alamo doesn't have great customer service, but the price is almost always the lowest.

Depending on the cost for parking at the Hilton and whether it would add any extra to your rental car you might consider just getting a car for the entire trip. That's what I probably would do. It would save you the hassle of a shuttle to/from the Hilton. By the time you pay for that you might as well pay for a night of parking and an extra day on your rental car.

Sounds like a great trip!! Have fun!

A couple of years ago we stayed at Ko Olina for a week, and at the Waikiki Marriott for two nights before that. We took a cab from the airport to Waikiki, and then picked up our our Alamo rental car (Costco, Entertainment Book, AAA...one of those, as the rates were all close) a few blocks away when it was time to head to Ko Olina. They picked us up at the hotel, and then we simply returned it at the Alamo close to the airport at the end of the week.

Now that's the best plan!

We rented thru priceline, $12 a day here on Oahu and Maui. Had to pickup at the airport.

We also have rented thru enterprise, there is one that will pickup at Ko'Olina and bring you back when done.

We have rented a car "at" the airport (some are just outside, like other airports). Some advice I got which worked----about 2 weeks prior to leaving check rates on Hotwire. We got Avis, full-size Chevy cheaper than anything else. Avis was fantastic---no lines (unlike the cheaper ones). Don't do it earlier, though. Hotwire puts the charge right on your card when you reserve. We probably reserved and cancelled 3 times prior to Hotwire on our last trip, continually getting a better deal. We got the same kind of car in Maui, too. Hotwire does not tell you which company you are going to get in advance (I think they tell you the group of 5 or so it will be from). If their deal is no better, then bag it. We made out very well as did those who recommended this to me.
