Ko Olina cockroach problem

there are flying cucarachas in Hawaii, I had one fly in on the 15th floor!

We have had roaches at many stays in Hawaii. Only once in Maui on the first floor did we feel there were too many. It was ridiculously over ran. We arrived late so we did spend the night with them. We took bonus time at a different resort for the rest of that week. A few other resorts had baby roaches or a roach.

I haven't yet seen a roach in Mexico. :) Maybe they use the good stuff to kill them, idk.

But have you had tarantula hawks in your room? We had them on two separate nights at Club Cascadas in Cabo San Lucas. Between those and roaches it's a difficult decision but I honestly think I would take the roaches. <<shudder>>

I guess we must have been lucky. We have been to Ko Olina 5 times, the most recent in April and May 2021, and never saw a cockroach once.

As per a lot of the posts here, it's not really luck if you don't see any cockroachs. We're talking large buildings and many resorts have multiple buildings. Most people stay a week or two so it is highly likely that you may get a unit with no issues during your visit. Often when spraying is done some get away and move to another unit. It's usually always a moving problem.

So it's very likey people could visit for a few years and not see any but if you come often enough you will see them.

Nope. We frequent the resort just north of Cascadas called the Villa del Arco and the only thing to report are geckos and iguanas. I guess that's why they call them bugs. They bug us. :)

Tarantula hawks supposedly have the most painful bite of any insect. We have these in spades and cockroaches as well in S Arizona. Shoes and cats keep the roaches at bay.

It was like having a drone in our room. We had no idea what we were dealing with - my husband killed them with his flip flops but they were very scary!

If frank808 would clean his kitchen maybe there would be no cockroaches! :D

Hey hey. Housekeeping comes in once a week and cleans up the kitchen

I have seen roaches here on occasion. I can say I have only encountered more than one roach in a unit probably three times in over 350 weeks here. I have been in units from ground floor and up. Sorry I get treated the same as everyone. The last unit that had a bunch of roaches in the kitchen was on the 4th floor IIRC.

Side note I actually know the guy that does the pest control here. He comes and sprays each unit about once every 2 months for pests.

Only 1 I can recall recently was one in Destin on the 12 floor, it was the size of a small dog. LOL. I killed it and there were body parts lying around afterwards.

Just came back from Ko Olina. The resort is beautiful, location is perfect, enjoyed sunsets, pools and lagoon. However, i saw cockroaches from the day 1. when i opened a dishwasher, about half an inch size cockroach was in there, alive. I quickly closed the door and ran the steam cycle. Hoped there was no other cockroach. I know there are huge roaches which is called palmetto bug in tropical area, and they live outside but occasionally fly in and makes people scared.
the cockroaches i saw in the kitchen was NOT that kind, they didn’t fly, they were very lively and fast. They came down from the back of kitchen cabinets and were everywhere. I killed 4, my kids killed 3, and one was on the dining table one day.
I called the maintenance and asked to spray to make them go away. While they were spraying the chemical inside and under the cabinets, they killed one more.
the spay was useless, i saw them every morning and evening. It was really stressful.
my son said they are better than bed bugs, easy to see and they don’t bite.
I have two more reservations at Ko Olina, back to back weeks and not sure should i stay there again with cockroach problem. Maybe i will stay at Hilton Hawaiian Village instead.
When i stayed at Marriott Maui Ocean club, i saw the same kind cockroaches in the shared kitchen area on the first floor where guests use stoves. Even though i saw cockroaches in the kitchen, i didn’t see any in my unit and it didn’t bother me that much.
i just checked tripadvisor reviews about Ko Olina and surprised that no one complained about the cockroaches. Maybe that’s normal for Hawaii resorts?

We just left Ko Olina today. We were in the Moana building and did not see a single cockroach. The only place I saw them was on the path around the lagoons.

At MKO we haven't "seen" any roaches at any of our stays but know they exist. A couple of times there we've had ants, but there was a can of insect spray under the kitchen sink and a few spritzes at the cracks they were coming out of stopped them. And we made sure to ziplock bag or stick anything that might attract them into the refrigerator.

We've also had some occasional ants at our Marriott Phuket Beach Club villas, but a little spray and ziplocks/refrigerator and they didn't come back. Haven't seen any roaches there (yet!) but they've got a lot of bugs since they're also tropical weather! Or it could be the little geckos all around the buildings that help control the crawling bugs! It's the mozzies outside there that bug me the most!

But I remember when staying years ago at a resort in Tahiti and also a Disney timeshare, there were some huge flying roaches crawling around in the room or shower stall! Disney sent maintenance to spray. In Tahiti, the Tahitian girl from the reception desk came up and just smashed the huge roach with her fist! Yeeks - I can still here that "crunch" sound in my mind when she smashed it! Yeah, sissy here. I can kill them with something like paper, swatter, shoe, etc. but can't get myself to smash it directly! I leave the bug killing mostly to hubby or the cats!

About 25 years ago we stayed at a beautiful b&b on Kauai that was featured in Hawaii Magazine. It was located in a tropical flower farm, but after seeing these gigantic flying B52 roaches, we beat a hasty retreat! We must be extremely lucky, we own at Ko'Olina, Maui Ocean Club, and Waiohai and have never encountered a roach in any of our units. We are currently at Ko'Olina and no sightings this trip either!

If you want to meet another Tugger, drop me a PM. Anyone else here at MKO that would like to have a little TUG meet n greet?

The only MVC property I ever saw roaches at was when we were at NCV in 2019…we were there on an II exchange and added a night to the beginning of our stay using dc points…we arrived in the villa unpacked and when my wife took a look under the kitchen sink there were roaches crawling around….they came up immediately and sprayed…and thankfully,we didn’t see another roach for the rest of our vacation…they refunded the points that we used for that one night…and gave us a $25 voucher for the La Vista pool bar and restaurant.
