Received a letter from Marriott yesterday telling me that I was going to be in Platinum until February 2015 even though I only had 55 days in 2013. This is the third year in a row that I retained Platinum without meeting the requirements. I do have the black card; own four weeks; and belong to DC but haven't bought any points.

Benefits? United Silver and really good free food in Marriott's English and Scottish hotels last year.

Thanks. Glad to hear it. I too have fallen short of Platinum. I have 70 nights in 2013 and three years as a Plat member. I hope that I get the same letter.

Good for you!! This is pretty surprising to hear that they still keep you at platinum even after several years of coming up short. I thought they would keep you for one year but several is really nice of Marriott.

I'm curious how long did you actually legitimately make plat before they started giving it to you?

Also do you have status in another competitor's program? I had heard several brands will offer high end users of the competition status to switch so wondering if that may be it.

During other years the snail-mail letters for Elite Status have always come out a few weeks after the changeover happens in our online accounts. I'm wondering if the few letters that have come out early this year are related to the error messages that showed up online a few weeks ago? And if so, can they be relied upon as official notices?

I have no idea what the answers are, just thinking out loud ...

Could be a mistake but I got the whole package; letter; brochure with the benefits; and, the plastic card with my name and mr number and the words "Platinum Elite" on it with a valid date of "02/2015".

As long as you received the plastic card with the new expiration date that indicates that you're platinum, I am sure that it's not a mistake.

I got one of these letters in November or December a couple years ago. However, it turned out to be academic because we had a December vacation booked and I ended up with the required number of nights. I suppose it is possible they looked at the pending reservations in making the decision, but I doubt it because if that were the criterion why not just wait to see if I actually made it by year-end?
