Kayaking in KY and TN

This is my first time in this forum - I normally hang out in Eastern and the Lounge.
My wife and I are considering loading the kayaks in the back of our truck and heading west from Richmond, VA to kayak flatwater in WVA, Ky, and/or TN. Whitewater rafting would not be out of the question, but we would leave the 'yaks in the truck. :eek:
Can anyone offer any help?
Where to go is our main concern, but if anyone wants to suggest motels, restaurants, or other sights, that would be very nice too.

The Lower Pigeon River near Gatlinburg TN is often used by outfitters for float rafting, tubing and gentle kayak trips. The Upper Pigeon River is used for whitewater. There are many timeshares in the region of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville.

Also near that area, check out the TN State Parks website for boating ideas. Panther Creek State Park includes Cherokee Reservoir which allows boating. It's about an hour's drive from Pigeon Forge, less from Sevierville, more from Gatlinburg. Not all TN state park lakes and waterways permit private boats to be launched but this is one of those that do permit them.

If you decide that you want to visit the Lake Lure/Asheville area of NC, Lake Lure is a lovely lake with many quiet coves that are nice for flatwater canoeing and kayaking. Also, the French Broad River goes through Asheville and it's VERY popular for canoeing, tubing and kayaking. Parts go through town and other parts are very scenic and natural. Lots to do in the area otherwise too. Timeshares in Lake Lure, Sapphire Valley and Maggie Valley are all within an hour's drive of Asheville (most on winding roads though).
