My family (5 people) is scheduled for WPORV 7/3/09. We arrive on Kauai on 6/30/09. Which type of accommodation choice do you think best for the 3 nights preceding our check in at WPORV?

1. Sheraton Koloa 9600 spg + $180 per nite (2 rooms @ 4800 + $90 each)
2. Private Condo (South, East or North?)
3. Other suggestions?

This will be our first use year at our TS. Past trips to Kauai we have rented private condos or homes for the duration and never had to unpack more than once. Thanks for any ideas that can keep costs down!

I would pick the Sheraton Koloa. The beach is fabulous. You are paying a decent price, although they will probably put you in the older garden view rooms. It is on the opposite side of the island from WPORV which will allow you to go to Waimea Canyon and other southside locations without too much extra driving. My ideal Kauai trip involves splitting my visit between south and north shores.

This opinion is also based on my guess that you will have trouble renting a private condo for only three days at that time of the year.

Thanks Vacationtime. I am leaning toward the Sheraton but am not sure about having to eat all meals at restaurants for 3 days. That is the only downside. I have found some 2 bedroom condos that will take a reservation for 3 nights and the per night rate is less than the combined rate at the Sheraton. But that Sheraton resort looks really nice. I just can't decide.

We just did that last year. We exchanged for a week in the North and spent 4 nights at the Sheraton in the South. The drive from the North to the South can take hours depending on traffic, and I wouldn't recommend doing that more than once or twice on a trip.

Many of the units at the Sheraton have been remodeled and we happened to stay in one of the remodeled ocean front units. It is an older resort but in a good location.

Good luck.
