Like you, I too bought and then rescinded. Have since bought retail and have enjoyed it very much.

HGVC only has a few locations outside the US, the sales person probably showed you Max properties which include HVC (former DRI). He could have also mixed in RCI properties.

If you purchased points it was HVC, vs deeded HGVC.

You will need to tell us where you want to go and how many people will be traveling with you (studio, 1BR, 2BR).

Here is the deal (IMO), HGVC is a wonderful TS system for resale owners but the locations of the resorts are limited. So, if you can live with the locations and can book 9-months out, the system should work great (except for ski winter weeks and Florida golf properties). If you want a specific week at a specific resort during prime time then you need to research if that will be doable. If you are flexible, then the system works much better especially if you are a planner.

HVC is a completely different animal. I wouldn't recommend it unless you research that system.

Well, there isn't really a HGV for ownership. It is the umbrella company. There is HGVC, bHC, HVC, DRI, and Embarc.

Not quite. I think to be clear for someone who is new to learning about the program, it is best to use the current terms. As Hilton Grand Vacations has made things very confusing.

HGV - The umbrella company that owns the following.
HGVC - Hilton Grand Vacations Club
HC - Hilton Club. Though many here still call it bHC (by Hilton Club)
HVC - Hilton Vacation Club (formerly known as DRI or Diamond Resorts)
HGVC/Embarc - HGV is rebranding Embarc resorts to Hilton Grand Vacations Club, but they won't have crossover access to HGVC properties without using HGV Max.
Bluegreen Vacations - Recently acquired by HGV. No integration announcements yet.

If you bought a deed with points, you likely bought something on the HGVC side (where did you buy). In that case, you do have the flexibility you are talking about, but only within the HGVC locations, not the HVC/DRI locations. So, you do have options, but not the full combined set of locations.

I’m definitely a planner, most of my travel is planned 9 month out or longer. I do not need prime time, and Studio is fine. Bottom line I’m flexible and a planner.

HGVC doesn't have any coverage in Spain, or Santa Fe and is super limited in Portugal (you will not be able to reserve because there are only 16 units which rarely become available). New York will be part of bHC so you will have a restricted booking window. I am not sure that HGVC is a good match for you.

I think we are taking more and better vacations, but not sure we "saving money." Pretty sure we are spending about the same and maybe more, but post-Covid things are different and just now settling down. I think most people like what they have if they us it. Note: You must use it.

Its always a question compared to what and how do you want to travel. If you are on West Coast, able to wing it timewise, I think GPX (some Marbrisa and other TS) has tremendous opportunities with last mintute deals.

Some places like SFX* and AFVclub can be low cost ways to try some places. I find Redweek and others rental places closer to full MF Cost, but has better selection and ability to try before you buy. we have a stay coming at Kohala that was abit less than points use after fees and even joining. *-This tpye of membership is a whole other option, but I find HGVC to be a better fit for us.

We settled on HGVC and its it is complex enough for us and give us enough options. For Europe we were looking at Hapimag, but we can't plan that far out right now and I don't know if it saves enough money to make the juice worth the squeeze right now for us. I can see it working when we have more time.

Also when you buy (resale) a deed that you actualy want at an amazing price. Oh and informed for weeks not minutes, you will convert into someone who will have a different opinion of timeshare than 90% of society. That with TUG and you'll be able to save money... or just travel more and stay for longer at places you enjoy.

Once you settle on what you think you want, people here can probably point you in a direction to find a good deal on it or you'll have fun looking for the deal yourself.

Buy HGVC for a higher end resort but not as many, 48? Buy where you want to go, then trade @ 9 months. Worst case you have a wonderful week at your home resort. HGVC is very friendly with resale, I have 2 and they treat you well. Can be traded @ RCI but with fees, hope they mention that.

Quick question on RCI. I know there is a fee. My question is more about how it is done, is it with points or simply trading a week?

I think it can, depending on how you valuate and value the different opinions and opportunities.

For instance, for us, I think we do save money for what we get. Many people with HGVC also stack their AE Aspire/Surpass with HH points to get additional value. If I base the HH point to be 0.5¢ each, and the FNC to be worth $500 (which is a conservative estimate, I got about 0.7¢ and $700 for the FNC based on the cash prices of my redemptions this past year), I got abou $2200 in value from my spending/bonus points and FNC value from my aspire, and $1300 from my Surpass…this actually covers my maintenance fees for my Elara 2BR and my W57th Studio+.

Other value that is yours for the taking…we just stayed at a 1BR+ at W57th last night,, and they offered an “owners update” at a convenient time for us for 200,000 HH points…yeah we took that (that’s $1000 of HH points using HH “math”). And we got a shortened meeting, less than 45minutes out the door. So that basically gave us a free stay+ today.

So could we have traveled to the same places cheaper? Sure, via Hampton inn/motel6/sleazy 8 motels. Would it be as enjoyable as we travel now? Definitely not.

But, how do you amortize your initial costs? That will surely subtract from the value, and I am ignoring those as sunk costs for my purposes…I don’t obsess over that in order to not take away from my enjoyment at this point.
