John Oliver’s take on Timeshares

I watched it last night. In general i agree with what he said about wastegate and wyndham. Of course this group of people on TUG, that has learned how to use timeshare, is likely the outlier/exception. It was intended to alert the general public, but it makes it more difficult to explain the true benefits of timeshare when people watch this sensational stuff. Then they look at me like i'm stupid for owning and using them.

I am a happy Timeshare Owner as well.
You think JO did a disservice to people because he didn’t talk about the resale market and Timeshares that have value?

I know what too many (especially elderly) that are stuck and have been doubly screwed by Timeshare Exit Companies OR by having to buy more to get ‘benefit’ from theirs (e.g. MVC)

This is spot on!

Yes, all heirs would have to disclaim the timeshare if not left to a specific person, and it would go in age order, essentially. That being said, it's usually a one page declaration at least in the states i practice in. For me personally, I plan on getting rid of most of them once i am a widow, to avoid this. For now, my will gives my timeshares to my relatives i don't speak to, so just those relatives have to disclaim.
but it still technically stays in the ESTATE and the estate cant close out etc....

vs automatically transferring the deed to an heir without their action (or signature, etc).

Wyndham's acronym was hilarious. That is definitely what they do.

I think it's also Westin/ Marriott's acronym as well after our last presentation on Maui two years ago. They just made up whatever they could to get us reeled in.

agreed, I got a laugh there too and have no doubt that is an industry wide acronym (in sales anyway)...vs something wyndham specific!

all in all, I think this was a very well done video
I put this up on TUG Facebook group and it was removed.
TugBrian. Why?

dont think the FB groups allow posting of external videos as an anti-spam thing...we were inundated with them before disabling that feature.

itll be in the newsletter this saturday anyway!

Would love to have a template included in a TUG sticky that contains suggested wording for this. Similar to a rescission letter.

Also who do you send the disclaimer to? The state? If so what dept? The timeshare company? the Estate? Is it 9 months for each heir? or in total?

FWIW this builds a case to simply will it to the TS developer. If they don't act in time, then it's all theirs...;)

i have to imagine that the letter/process varies from state to state... but perhaps the language used can be templated!

right? seems like a perfect solution after 9 months!

I think the resale market could have been briefly discussed because it is an option to exit but also an option to buy in at a reasonable cost and, for the most part, hold its value....if it is a major company.

The video was mainly a schtick to feed off the common issues that happen within the industry as a whole. I don't think it was meant as an educational video.

There are only two real takeaways here:

1) Timeshare Exit companies are scum.

2) The average person will not read.

How many hundreds/thousands of happy owners do we have here (some reading this message right now) who are getting every penny's worth out of their timeshare?

What separates the happy owners from the unhappy owners? The happy owners did their homework. Period.

Everyone else was suckered by the promise of a free gift. And took the presentation -- knowing full-well it would be a high pressure sales pitch -- because someone dangled a meal, a show, or some tickets in front of them. The problem isn't timesharing. The problem is the game-show that it is wrapped up in. The person who is going to enjoy their timeshare does not need (or want) any gifts -- such people are intelligent enough to realize that all these "gifts" just push prices up for the buyers.

And yet, week in and week out, people post here about the gifts and the tours, acting like they have "beaten the man" because they received a gift in exchange for hours of their vacation.

I watched it until the 3rd F-bomb.

Marked safe from ever watching a single minute of any episode of John Oliver's show.

I take it you're not a fan of Pulp Fiction?
I've noticed that PG-13 rated movies are allowed one, or maybe two F-bombs, but never 3.

So is it the data point from JO true that 85% of timeshare owners are dissatisfied, or something to that effect? If you are a timeshare owner I'm guessing from now on, you will never say that out loud to anyone ever again LoL

I think that if it isn't 85%, it's probably close. There aren't very many of us who are enthusiastic about our timeshare ownership. During the very rare times timeshares come up in conversation, most people talk about it as if it is a venereal disease.

Only the happy timeshare owners are going to end up on a timeshare forum. The rest very likely suffer in silence.

A lot depends on who is doing the survey and how they ask the question. I think the 85% comes from a UCF survey asking owners if they regretted the purchase. Yet an ARDA survey indicates 90% are happy with their overall experience. You can come to just about any conclusion based on how the question is asked and who is funding the survey.

Exactly. If I am remembering correctly, according to our unofficial poll here didn't over half of Tuggers initially buy retail? I'm sure almost all of those regretted, in some fashion, their initial purchase. Surveys can be manipulated in many ways.

Proof that one person's trash is another person's treasure. Our timeshare is the best toy we ever purchased. It has saved us an extraordinary amount of money vacationing. And it is only with the advent of AirBnB that a viable alternative even exists.

This was for the 85% of timeshare buyers that regretted their purchase and the 99% of those ripped off by Timeshare Exit companies.

Not those - like me and many educated Tuggers here - that are happy with their TSs.
