Jim Nabors, star of 60's TV's Gomer Pyle has passed in Hawaii at age 87. He moved to California for his Asthma and was discovered by Andy Griffith. He made lots of people laugh, and wasn't a bad singer either.

I saved the recording of him singing "Back Home Again in Indiana" for the last time at the Indy 500 a few years ago

I read that that song was a standard for him, but don't think I have ever heard it. I enjoy him on Andy Griffith every night at 8 p.m.

RIP Jim Nabors. You may so many veterans laugh at you playing USMC Gomer Pyle.

He was a pretty happy guy. Had a long career, doing what he loved to do. Good for him. RIP.

Dave

All I can say is , GOLLY !!!!

News like that starts to freak me out when I realize that even though Cliff is as healthy as he always has been, next April he'll be 80 and no denying that 80 is getting "up there".

Gawwwwleeee. I've seen him on The Andy Griffith Show reruns, which are still running. And I liked the USMC Gomer Pyle character, mostly to see him drive Sgt. Carter crazy.

Jim Nabors dances to Led Zeppelin...

I remember the shock of hearing him sing for the first time. He had such a kind of squeaky speaking voice, and then he opens his mouth and this booming baritone comes out! Here's a clip (in which you realize that "The Impossible Dream" is an impossibly long song and has a lot more verses than you remember).

Gosh, really? Here he is singing it.

Thanks. I won't remember Mr. Nabors from his role as Gomer, but for his fantastic rendition of this fine song. I flew back from Honolulu to Chicago with him one year, a couple days prior to the Indy 500. Felt a little sorry for him though, as so many old women were gawking and whispering to each other when they saw him at the gate. None had enough courage to simply approach him & say hello, and that was a bit funny.

He had a beautiful, baritone voice, but I never saw him being particularly animated while he sang. He was an active, physical actor, but didn't seem to be able to combine the two styles. Still, he had a long and successful life. I wish his family and loved ones peace.

Jim

I have Mr. Nabors’ “Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha” saved from youtube. Such a contradt with his speaking voice. RIP

Thanks for the clip, Wacky. I am not a racing fan, so never heard about Indiana, but it is a beautiful song. Saw Nabors in that Impossible Dream episode just last night, and yes, it was a very long song.

I loved to hear him sing “Impossible Dream” truly a contradt from his speaking voice.
Thanks for sharing that YouTube clip.

"Back Home Again in Indiana" is in that general category of state songs, with things like "My Old Kentucky Home" and "The Jersey Bounce." I was going to put the "Tennessee Waltz" in here, but then I realized it's really not about Tennessee at all, it's about Patsy Cline's friend stealing her sweetheart away.
