Jay Leno's New Show Debuts Tonight

This show is a train wreck. Everything seems forced and the comedy bits aren't all that funny. I predict the ratings will drop significantly. Everyone's watching the first few shows because they hyped the crap out of it all Summer. I can't imagine a large audience hanging with this drivel for the long haul, especially once the new shows start up in a couple of weeks.

I can't agree more - looks like it is just the old Leno show, same band, same "funny headlines," same monologue, etc. Luckily I recorded it, fast forwarded through most of the first night except Sienfeld but even their interaction seemed stiff. Unless he has some really great guests on in the future, I won't watch again.

Shux, if some out-of-the-way cable channel started airing old Johnny Carson Tonight Show reruns with Ed & Doc & the band, I suspect they'd draw plenty of late-nite viewers -- at least among us old folks.

Bingo, you said it – with the emphasis on “old folks”. The majority of Leno’s audience was creeping older and older which is the only reason they transitioned it over to Conan. The over 54 audience is considered toxic waste to advertisers and that’s where Leno was trending. I’m 39 and I love Conan. I like Leno to, but I really love Conan. I’ve never liked Letterman and I think Jimmy Fallon’s show is a train wreck. I don’t think the new Tonight Show with Conan is at risk no matter what Leno does just b/c of the demographic Conan attracts.

There are a lot of people in the LA community who are really rooting for Leno to flop. For that reason and also b/c I like Leno, I’d like for his show to succeed. The reason is b/c his show is cheap to produce with a lot fewer jobs needed to run it compared to the typical scripted dramas that are normally in that time slot. Here’s a good article from the LA Times on it.

Ditto. I like jay leno. He seems to be a good guy. I watched the first show but will not be watching many more. It is sad to say but I thought it was really lame. OK for 11:30 pm when your tired and not expecting much. There is some excellent TV at 10 pm on most nights on broader TV beyond the networks.

I read that NBC has agreed to keep it on for 2 years and figures that its low cost will enable them to make money with less than great ratings. A total surrneder by NBC.

I guess most of the critics were expecting something completely new. I was hoping the ole Jay would be back on at an earlier time slot. His standup is still the best in the business. His 10 at 10 last night was funny and entertaining. The thing I always enjoyed about his standup was his spin on the day's news. Until I heard the news according to Jay I knew that I had not put the proper perspective on it.

I like Jay and I'm glad to see him back again. I can always count on lots of laughs when he does "Headlines." I think that's my favorite thing he does. I also like Jaywalking.

Jerry Seifield:
"When I found out that I was going to be the first guest, I was disappointed that you could not get a bigger star. Do you realize that I have not been on TV in 11 years? Did you try to get Oprah?... I could get Oprah for you."
[Funnier than anything Jay did.]

I've always liked him but he's nowhere near as funny as he used to be. I saw him live a couple of times 20-25 years ago before he was really well known. He was original, creative and hysterical. Now he just seems tired and he's not in the least bit original. All his "signature" bits are ripped off from someone else. Letterman has been doing the "Headlines" thing way longer than Jay, "Jaywalking" is a direct rip-off of Howard Stern's Homeless Game, and the new "Green Car Challenge" was lifted from some British show.
I think, unfortunately that his time has come...and gone. Time will tell.

Watched the first night and it was not interesting. Watched Robin Williams last night then shut it off. I don't think I would even TIVO it.
