Itty bitty Acer computer

They just started selling the Acer Aspire One two days ago, Dave. Your report doesn't make sense. They also sell other Acer computers, as far as I know.

A lot of people like the Acer Aspire One. It's a very popular model.

With Costco's return policy, if your store has the 160G/1G/Win XP/6-cell version, it's worth trying if you are interested in it. You can always return it within 30 days, as far as I know. At $349, the 160G/1G/Win XP/6-cell version is a bargain. If your store has the 120G/1G/Win XP/3-cell version, it's not as much of a bargain, but it's still a good price for that configuration.

The Lenovo S10 I ordered from Circuit City (1G/160G/Win XP/3-cell/Express Card Slot/Upgradeable memory + disk) arrived today.

So far I like it. I'm still getting used to the small keys, and Lenovo has a bad habit of swapping the Function and Control keys on their keyboards. I haven't found a way to remap the Fn key, but you can easily remap any other key. I did remap Caps Lock to Control with a simple registry editing utility. The tab key is in the right place, except it's half the size of the other standard sized keys. The 10" screen is really great. Very easy to read and nice and bright.

I checked the Maui Costco, and their shipment of Acer Aspire One's is in transit, and expected in a couple of weeks. I'm not sure if there's any way to know if it's the 3-cell or 6-cell version until they show up. The price on Maui will be $359 according to the person that looked it up.

The S10 came with Norton Internet Security installed. I removed that and replaced it with a separate A/V program and Firewall. It also came with some sort of Windows Live Toolbar that I also removed. Other than that, there wasn't much crapware installed. I spent the afternoon copying over my firefox and thunderbird profiles and installing some other software.

Sorry, let me clarify: He's returned four Acer computers in two days, which he said included this little one. (He didn't say how many of the four were this specific model.) He says they get Acers returned at a very high rate, and says they get more complaints about that brand name than just about anything else. His point was that he thinks poorly of the brand name, and suggests anyone looking to buy one should be careful that they get what they're expecting.

I specifically went to Costco yesterday just so I could see one of these machines. I agree, at $349, I can forgive a lot of shortcomings. Unfortunately, they didn't have any on the shelf for me to see...

We bought one last year while at the Manhattan Club. My husband always has to go to J&R and it was $300 there. We now have 5 computers, and I think it loves that one best! Great for traveling...

Yes, that makes sense. For comparison purposes, my Lenovo S10 with 1G/160G hard drive, 10" screen, and 3-cell battery and Win XP Home was $449 from CC. They have a model on lenovo.com that only has 512M/80G hard drive, 3-cell, WinXP Home and it's $399. They don't offer the larger memory, larger disk drive verion on their own web site yet.

The Acer Aspire One seems to be well liked and it's selling like hotcakes. If anybody is interested in trying one, the Costco deal seems like it's worth checking out, since they have a very reasonable 30-day return policy on computers, IIRC.

Mine arrived today -- I love it!!! It fits in my purse (no more lugging a briefcase when I'm traveling for pleasure) and it's such a pretty blue! :) I was afraid of the keyboard size/screen size, but I'm not having any trouble with it at all.

Now ... I need to find another broadband card. I've had the Verizon one for the last two years -- and it works great everywhere except where my parents live (middle of nowhere, Ohio). They're not in good health, so I find myself visiting pretty often these days. Anyone know a website where you can put in a zip code/town name and find out which mobile company has the best internet access? The Verizon contract is up ... time to switch.
 
It helps a lot by giving me a list of providers in the area -- thanks Richard.

Even better than that - Costco will let you return computers for up to 90 days. :)

I noticed the Costco.com website does not have the small Acers today. Must have sold them out. That's a killer deal.

If you want either Acer version - 120GB harddrive for $369.99 or 160GB harddrive for $20 more you can get them from www.compusa.com

Their sale ends Friday October 31st.

I received an email from them but had trouble locating the offer on their website. If you can't find it - call them.

J & R had a good selection of them last week when I ordered mine ... from $329 to $429 if I remember correctly. Shipping is cheap and fast.
 
It's now available on costco.com, but for $399 (1G/160G/6-cell).

Snoozed and loozed

Monday I went into my local Costco and the Aspire One's hadn't arrived. Today I went in and they were all gone.

Eighteen more coming probably Monday.

Meanwhile, walmart.com has the 120Gb/3-cell model for $348 and the 160Gb/6-cell model for $398, which I think is the same deal at Costco in person and definitely the same as costco.com. Walmart bills the smaller unit as "A child's perfect first computer." Actually, that might be true of the diskless Linux version. Walmart.com also has two Linux models, and a couple of the other minis, including an ASUS Eee.

Staples.com has the 120Gb/3-cell one at $349 this week, and also a deal on a printer when you buy any notebook. That's the model in my local store too.

Newegg has several models, the two Windows ones at $349 and $399. Read the descriptions carefully; they also have the Linux version, and some of those with 1Gb vs 512Mb RAM. The difference between the 512Mb Linux and the 1Gb Windows with hard drive is only $20... I must be missing something.

For the same price ($399), Big Lots (SoCal stores, apparently not biglots.com) has a Compaq CQ50-110US, 15.4 screen 2.0 Turion 3Gb/200Gb/Vista Home that burns DVD and CD. This one's still $749 at amazon.com. You can trade size(9" vs 15) and weight (2.2 vs 6.5) for lots more power, and a screen that's 3 times as big and has higher resolution.

I'm trying to hold out. At this price, they'll be giving them away six weeks from now. Either that, or they'll all be gone.

Costco b&m was selling both versions for $349. Some stores got the 120G 3-cell version and some got the 160G 6-cell version. Was it a mistake? Maybe. I don't know. Anyway, at $349, the 160G/6-cell version is a bargain if you can find it.

I have the 160 GB Acer with Windows XP Home.

I want to partition the drive to put My Documents on the new partition, which I've done on my desktop with XP Pro. However, when I run diskgmt.msc (or use My Computer, Disk Management from My Computer) and then right-click over the 150 GB partition, I don't have the capability to partition it. Is it not possible to partition this drive?
 
Does anyone know if this computer can be used to accesss and work on the e-college platform? I am unable to this on my blackberry and would buy one of these if I could use it to work with e-college. I travel a lot and have a small five pound laptop for travel but this would be a godsent.

This is basically a full-featured computer in a very small package, and does what other computers do. It works different than how a Blackberry works. If your e-college connection is a regular Internet website, there's no reason I can think of that it wouldn't work for you. All you'd need to be able to do is connect to the Internet wherever you are. It won't create the connection out of thin air, but you can use wireless hotspots and such. (And cell phone companies sell cards you can use to get online via your cell provider, if you need that.)

Costco has a 90-day no-questions-asked return policy. Buy one from them, try it, and if it won't work for some reason, return it. If you buy from Costco.com, they'll even refund the shipping charges and sales tax. Plus, you can return it to a local Costco warehouse, even if you buy it from them online.

Went to my local Costco warehouse again today, and saw they now have a display model of the Acer with 120gb drive for $349. "Sold out until the end of the week," the sign said. I spoke with one of the staff, and he said they expect to have more in by Friday. Costco.com has the 160gb version for fifty dollars more, in your choice of two different colors.

Man, I'm tempted. But I already have the Asus Eeepc, and it works great. But this larger hard drive and larger screen size sure is appealing...

Those of you who own this machine: What are the drawbacks you dislike? What would you do differently? Is there a real reason for me to change, beyond satisfying the seriously geek side of my personality? ;)
