It's Solstice Time - When the Sun Has No Impact on Temperatures
By Tracy Sinclare/ Weather/ KTUU/ ktuu.com
"ANCHORAGE (KTUU) — As we get close to the winter solstice, most locations in Alaska experience at least one day when the sun plays no part in the temperature changes from day to night, even in areas where the sun rises every day.
Typically, incoming solar energy warms the earth during the day and causes the temperature to rise. Once the sun goes down, the earth radiates that heat back into the atmosphere and air temperatures cool. Other weather factors can also influence temperature changes, such as wind and cloud cover but primarily, it’s solar energy.
From the Arctic Circle to just north of Anchorage, most parts of Alaska will see from one to 125 days where the sun provides no solar heating. It’s because of the low angle of the sun...."
