I've mentioned this before. I had a 6 night rental at Crystal Shores. The renter booked this in February after significant news reports about Covid-19. Around 3/20 I started getting questions from the renter. I would respond and then there would be a delay before I heard more from her. Finally, to get them to make a decision I sent them an ultimatum to keep the reservation, get a 2/3 refund or have till the end of the year to make a replacement reservation. I had even gone so far as to hold onto another Crystal Shores ressie beginning 6/22, just in case. They were going to Crystal Shores because she had parent nearby.

Finally she told me she had a preexisting medical condition which prevented them from traveling. They live in the Philadelphia suburbs.

They opted to try to recoup travel insurance from their credit card since they used it for part of the PayPal payment. I'm wondering how that went for them.

Because they didn't opt to take a partial refund or another reservation the original reservation remained in place. I received a text from Crystal Shores yesterday welcoming me to the resort. I called and asked to speak with a front desk manager. I explained to her that I had rented the week and as far as I knew they would not be arriving. She told me the pools were still open and so was the beach. It was a high floor pool view, 3 bedroom.

Empty. 4200 DC points.

That’s interesting about their pools and the beach. I live in a gated community in Sarasota and our pools and beach are closed. The governor finally issued a stay at home order on Friday!

My guess is that Crystal Shores has their own private beach (although clearly the public walks on the beach) and the public access to the beach "may be" blocked. Of course the Crystal Shore pools are privately owned.

Did the rental price at least cover your maintenances fees for 4200 points? If so, it’s not a loss for you.

I rented my Grande Ocean week starting next Sunday (RBC golf tournament week) and the renter whom I’ve been communicating with throughout opted to cancel and take the II certificate for future travel. They don’t have an II account so I will have to do the searches and help them find a replacement week in the future. Although they asked me about a refund I didn’t offer it as I didn’t have use for that week in any of my upcoming travel plans.

We are booked for a 3 bedroom at Crystal Shores for Xmas week this year. Will be our first time staying there. We used points and it was about 6,200 points for that week. Hopefully the world will be back to some normalcy by then?! Stay safe all!

I didn't lose anything. I didn't want them to lose either. Hope the insurance came through for them.

That was a very generous refund you offered them. I'm very surprised they didn't jump on it. If they ever get back to you on the insurance please let us know the outcome. Since I rent out weeks myself, I am very curious. BTW, I offered my upcoming renter for a late may Ocean Watch reservation a 50% refund or a replacement week. Since they also live in SC, they decide to sit tight for a while and see what happens.

I live about an hour from Marco. My neighbors family is spending ten days at the Marriott inn Or hotel on the water. They said yes they could use the beach and yes to the pool and yes they even went in the water. Said it is very quiet and uncrowded and they are having a great time.

I'm curious too about the credit card.

I had 5 renters impacted by the virus. The first was troublesome and took an 80% refund. I was glad to be done with her but she bugged me so I closed my PayPal account. When she decided to accept the refund she made demands that I send it via PayPal. I didn't tell her I had closed the account and told her it could be coming by check. As she couldn't do anything else she relented.

Renter 2 has been a delight. He is willing to accept a future booking and I have proactively reserved something on his desired list. We'll see how things are as the date gets closer.

Renter 3 is the one wanting to go the credit card route. I have wondered if the credit card would try to come back to me through PayPal. It's more likely they will recover their payout from an insurance company they work with.

Renters 4 & 5 both had units on Hilton Head beginning 4/11. They were contracted through VacationCandy. I saw the ordinance imposed as of yesterday and contacted VC today. Gave them terms for what I would do for the renters. Got back a very nice email thanking me for being proactive. Both renters would like to cancel and will get back to me what option they would like to take.

At least those 2 reservations won't feel wasted like the one at Crystal Shores.

Yes, if you are staying on a beach front property, you can use the beach. If you are staying anywhere else, you are out of luck. I live on the island about a mile and a half from the beach. We're just using our pool. Even the Residents' Beach and parking lot is closed to members. All the county parking lots and beach access points are closed on the island. They closed down the boat ramp at the south end of the island earlier this week.
