It's technically "against the rules." The bigger deal is that you are sponsoring them and you are responsible for any damage they may cause. There is risk.
If you rent out a reservation to someone, that may be true, but if you transfer points to them, you no longer have any association with those points or how they are used.

Right. That's why a transfer is safer as noted above. I took the question of "renting your points" to mean a reservation since a transfer is not a reservation. In any event, all has been answered somewhere in the thread. :) But it requires the other person to be a HGVC owner whereas a rental does not.

Cheers.

"Renting points" is also being used in the FB HGVC resale group to sometimes mean buying/transferring points. (actually, sometimes people will bring up guest certificate also, so I think "buying points" would be much clearer for everyone).

Got it. Thanks. I don't have FB, so had not seen this terminology.

Cheers.

yes but i recall that language about ‘guest certificates’ - that seems officially sanctioned so is the point that you can gift your reservation to a guest, but you cannot rent/sell them for $$$?

They must be related or "personally know to you" to get a guest certificate.

Yup, and some use the "personally known to you" very liberally. Now, you can rent your home week no problem. That's your week and if you want to rent it, HGVC doesn't have a problem with that.

I like HGVC's policy on selling/renting club reservations. It keeps the mega-renters from using club points to get the best weeks.

I agree. Actually, all of the owners are on an equal footing for booking during club season (< 276 days). If you would like an advantage then own a particular resort/unit to book during your home week (>276 days - 1 year). I like that option also for certain resorts.

but for me as a new owner potentially looking for more points, the important thing to know is it is not a good plan to regularly rent out points to recoup MFs in cases where I can’t use the points myself. maybe to family or close friends, but not on redweek etc?

I would caution against that plan for a few reasons: 1) Renting can be difficult and many things can go wrong. 2) It is officially against the rules although HGV does not seem to actively enforce it. 3) At any point, HGV could change their policy and crack down on renters, change fee structure to make it unprofitable, etc.

A better plan would be to buy the amount of points that you know you will use, instead of overbuying with the plan to rent out excess. JMHO.

I agree with @PigsDad, because the HGVC rules have changed in the past making some benefits (such as open season) really no longer a benefit.

I think that the occasional rental to folks that you do know, even if at a distance, is likely a safe strategy. Unknown folks and/or frequent rentals seems a bad idea for the reasons mentioned.

Cheers.
