What is the Brand/Name of the Modem you purchased???

And what is your provider?

Bandwidth Lust is a terrible thing.

At my last job, we had 14Mbps burstable to 40 Mbps for 135 people. It was plenty. They did ask us not to stream video before 5pm.

I like the Ferrari-in-a-traffic-jam metaphor.

ISP/WiFi Cable "SPEEDTEST" Results

On a related topic, this is a great video of the cables around the world that handle all the Internet traffic. Worth watching.

http://www.iflscience.com/technology/there-enough-internet-cable-under-sea-circle-earth-22-times

Ever wondered how the internet is received all around the world? While few of us still connect directly via an ethernet cable thanks to the invention of Wi-Fi, the internet is still delivered around the world through cables, most of which are deep below the sea, as this video by the Business Insider shows.

This undersea cable network stretches 885,000 kilometers (550,000 miles) – enough to circle the globe an astonishing 22 times. It weaves all over the Earth transmitting 99% of international data, sharing everything from the best pie recipe to the latest trades on the world's stock exchanges.

With FiOS 75:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 57462 kbps (7182.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 64286 kbps (8035.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 17 ms
Jitter: 1 ms

I've got 50MB service with Verizon FiOS and continually see the same speeds as those who have 75MB service (a few close friends):

Download Speed: 58334 kbps (7291.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 79641 kbps (9955.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 18 ms
Jitter: 1 ms

Not that I'm complaining...

I honestly have no idea what this all means, but I did have to go up a level of internet when we had 3 people streaming movies at the same time. We don't have that anymore (got TV again). I can probably go down a level or 2.

Download Speed: 20019 kbps (2502.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 11864 kbps (1483 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 16 ms
Jitter: 10 ms

You're right! I actually went and looked at my Verizon account and we DO have 50, not 75.

Verizon says we have high usage and a high number of devices and we should really upgrade, but I feel like as long as Netflix streams smoothly, I'm good. :)

That's hilarious (the upgrade bit). I'd put money on me having the highest bandwidth utilization than anyone else on this forum, and 50/50 is more than I'd ever need. Not once have I ever come close to saturating my WAN link. At least with Verizon (for now), they aren't threatening to charge extra for high utilization (300GB/month) like Comcast is now starting to do.

Broadband Report Card

There's more to broadband performance than speed alone. We're measuring a range of different metrics to get the complete picture on performance of ISPs nationwide. This report card shows how your broadband connection has performed over the last month.

For more detailed statistics, please visit the dashboard..

Project Update
September 2015 is a FCC reporting month, so please ensure your device remains connected.

Downstream throughput
Downstream throughput (or download speed) is the most commonly associated metric with broadband performance. It dictates the rate at which your computer will be able to fetch content (e.g. web pages, pictures, music, video etc) from the Internet.

64.37Mbps
Average

Upstream throughput
Upstream throughput (or upload speed) is the measurement of the rate at which your computer will be able to send or upload content (e.g. pictures, music, videos etc) to the Internet.

4.20Mbps
Average
3.71Mbps Min22:00, 08/09/2015
4.48Mbps Max16:00, 08/15/2015

Latency
Latency is the measurement of how long it takes one packet to be sent to one of our test servers, and then returned back to you. This can effectively be thought of as the responsiveness of the connection between your home and our servers out on the Internet.

28.85ms
Average
28.26ms Min03:00, 08/20/2015
30.13ms Max23:00, 08/20/2015
chart illustrating Latency

Packet loss
Packet loss is relatively rare in modern networks. That said, some broadband providers have been known to suffer high packet loss at peak times. If this is the case for your ISP then you may find that time sensitive applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and online gaming will suffer.

0.02%
Average
0.00% Min00:00, 08/02/2015

If a metric is not viewable, we have not received sufficient amount of data over the last month.

OK, here goes:

Download Speed: 7536 kbps (942 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 569 kbps (71.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 26 ms
Jitter: 21 ms
‎9‎/‎7‎/‎2015‎ ‎12‎:‎48‎:‎49‎ ‎PM

Looks pretty sloooowww, but it is what it is. I pay for the cheapest broadband my ISP offers. It plays movies in HD without buffering, so what's to gripe about?

OK, so now. 5 months later, and a new cable modem, and the ISP's free speed upgrade (actually they cut mu price $30/month!) here are the results:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 41012 kbps (5126.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3187 kbps (398.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 28 ms
Jitter: 43 ms
‎2‎/‎16‎/‎2016‎ ‎3‎:‎35‎:‎47‎ ‎PM

5-6 X faster. Woo-Hoo!

That and about $4 gets a coffee at Mickey-D's!

The point here is that if you have been with your ISP for a long time, they might have faster plans for less money. Call them.

Upload Speed: 12.43 Mbps (12,430 kbps)
Latency: 6 ms
