As long as the lounge is open to those with free passes. Haven't been in IAD recently but the last couple of times we were there several of the United lounges were not accepting passes at all. We have flown through Denver quite a few times over the past year and it's hit or miss whether the lounge will be open to passes. One time the women in front of us had purchased passes and couldn't get in. They were pretty upset.
Wow. We had a similar flight this past spring coming back from the west coast on a red eye thru chicago. We used our passes there on our 3 hr layover. The breakfast buffet was a nice touch to get ready for the flight home. I wish they actually had reclining chairs for a light nap but they want to discourage sleeping...

We have had several domestic lounge misses with our United card. Several times when we wanted to use the lounge passes with our card, we got turned away because the United clubs are at capacity and credit card passes are bottom in priority. What is worse is when we asked Chase/United for an extension on unused passes, they denied us.

Now that we are Lifetime Million Miler gold, we receive international gold star alliance lounge on international star alliance flights which includes United. Since we have had issues with domestic lounge capacity there is not much lost. We also get 2 free bags each.

Is it worth keeping the $95 card or should we downgrade to the free card? With Gold we get visibility to the best points redemptions with gold so many of the benefits of the card now feel redundant.

Are there any benefit to the free card that is worthwhile? Are we now wasting $95/year?

1 checked bag one time = $40. CC AF = $95. If you have Chase card you can get into Priority Pass lounges.

I would just pay the fee unless you have 2 bags. Or use other card as described above.
What Chase card are you talking about? CSR? This thread is about the Explorer card. No Priority Pass Lounge access with Explorer card.

If you won't miss the 2 free one-time Club passes I'd downgrade to the Gateway and then reapply for the Explorer after 24 months and pick up 50K>70K free miles. Wash, rinse, repeat.

One benefit of having the card is cheaper Mileage Plus award pricing when using miles to book flights.

You also get that when you have the no fee Gateway card.

I believe we also receive extra award flights as Gold Elite but there is no cost to downgrading just in case. IMHO...I am in agreement with the prior poster about the value of award miles devaluing. It used to take 24k miles RT across the USA. Now it is double that. Europe was 60k now double that. The card is hardly worth it for only 60k miles. I am increasingly using budget premium econ carriers such as French Bee, Level and Norse to Europe and paying cash.

Does that card also provide primary car rental CDW like the Explorer card does? Most credit cards just offer secondary CDW.

One reason to apply for the card is the mileage giveaway offered for opening it, provided you meet the spend requirement. We've not been turned away from using the United Club at LAX or SFO within the last several trips, but we did notice after leaving the club at ORD close by our arrival gate that the other, which was close to our departure gate, had a sign posted excluding credit card passes.
Recently at DFW, we were blocked out of immediate entry to the Capital One Club and had no desire to sit in the waiting area for admission!

I don't think that's true - every time I read the fine print on the cards it's the cardholder and maybe a second person. If it got me free checked bags for 3-4 people that I often fly with, or better, everyone I buy the tickets for, that'd be worth something. But it's limited to 2 people I think. I'm used to benefits that work with everyone in my party - and that seems the most worthwhile to me. IDK.
My Delta AMEX gives me free bags for everyone I book in that transaction.

We are downgrading from Explorer to gateway. No more passes, but we only used them once, July 2024. And likely got in at IAD because we arrived at noon. By 3:30 the lounge was packed. We also just downgraded Skymiles Amex to Blue Delta Amex when the fee went to $149. We typically only fly internationally, which usually has a free checked bag.

FWIW...We've have been turned away from SFO UAL lounge due to overcrowding. OTOH the Polaris lounge/restaurant in SFO is amazing but you cannot get into it without premium international tickets - the Explorer card lounge tickets do not apply.

No the United gateway card does not. Only the fee personal and business United cards by chase provide primary CDW here in the states and abroad. Most cards that offer secondary coverage has primary out of the USA except for a few countries where there is no coverage. Jamaica is one such country where credit card insurance will not provide coverage.

Wouldnt a round trip be $40 each way, so total of $80 for the trip? Thats much closer to the $95 fee.

I like the lounges, and used to have a membership, not not traveling enough to justify that anymore. Recently many of the lounges have been so crowded they limit the guests, and be careful about placing too much value on a couple of potential visits per year
If you dont have any United Status, having the card gives you a checked bag each way and two United passes. So one round trip you save $80 and have 2 United Club lounge passes. Only problem you have to contend with is if lounge is at capacity, Club will not accept passes and only admit full lounge members.

If OP flys once, the lounge access costs them $7.50 per visit. If OP flies twice, they are ahead on the luggage fees alone.

If you have the time, the United international Club lounge at G gate usually accepts pass holders. Well at least i have never seen the no passes sign out front when flying internationally out of there.

If you ever have a chance, checkout the United Club lounge at EWR by gate C123. That lounge is not as crowded and the buffet food is similar to the Polaris lounge at EWR. Plus the Club lounge at C123 is larger and has a barista. Also the showers in Club lounge is superior to the showers in the Polaris lounge (nicer and more shower rooms). The only thing that Polaris has over the C123 Club lounge at EWR is the made to order food. I have eaten at the Polaris lounge then walked over to the C123 lounge for a shower and some relaxing space.

I have been Platinum or 1K for the past 6 years and still have the United Club card. Annual Fee has gone from $395 to $525 during this time period but worth it to me. The free luggage has not been of any use since we get 3 pieces per person anyway. But the Club lounge access has been a savior. I was able to make a 14 day cruise a few years agobecause the agent in the lounge was able to get my family and I rebooked on a flight to Fort Lauderdale. Our luggage did not make it but we at least made it onto the ship. That alone saved me tens of thousands from not missing the cruise. We were supposed to fly in the day before the cruise but weather shut down most east coast airports and the cancellations were brutal. When we slow down to 4 United flights a year, wife and I will both carry the Explorer card.

I think the sapphire preferred card by chase does; free fist year 95 per after.

Question from an infrequent traveler. If I fly United from Chicago to vancouver, is there a charge for a checked bag?

If you are platinum/1K don't you already have club access? or is that only on international flights? You would keep 2 cards for 4 domestic lounge passes? Don't elites already have access to a special elite phone line to make alternative travel arrangements as you described?

$525 seems steep if you already receive many of the baggage and lounge benefits as an elite. However I may be overlooking something.

So Vancouver not considered international
I'm not sure there is anything specific about international. United breaks it down based on departure and arrival country.

If you are Premier Silver and above, then you get a free checked bag. If you are Marriott Bonvoy Titanium, you can link your United account to get United Premier Silver and thus a free checked bag.

You only get lounge access on international flights as United Plat / 1K / Star Gold, no domestic access without a club membership.

I had a membership for quite a few years, but now my work travel has stopped, and I am only doing a one or two leisure trips a year on UA. I let my membership lapse this year. I still have the United Quest card, which is their mid level card, that provides a some perks I use.

I get free bags based on my million miler status, which gives me and my wife Star gold for life.
