I have had an ongoing request with II since Feb. 2013 (14 mos ago) for an exchange in Jan. 2015, which is also the month my deposit expires (but can extend for 1 year for $189) I have requested a lot of resorts for the enitre month that I don't think are unreasonable. They keep calling me and saying they "are working on it". Today I asked the Rep. about cancelling this ongoing search, extending my week (by paying them the $189) to Jan 2016. He said if I did that, I could only do a flexchange, booking only 60 days out. Is this really true? He said this would happen even if they never matched my exchange, but I would get my exchange fee back at this time (gee....thanks).

Yes. When you extend a deposit it becomes only good during flexchange 59 days or less and can no longer make any on going search requests. It is a fairly big restriction. I know people hate to lose a week but unless you have a specific plan in place to use the week it is a lot of money that will be wasted if you still can't use the week.

Where are you trying to go in January and what size unit are you trying to get?

An alternative is to perform an exchange, then cancel. This would give you a replacement week that would be good for 1 year. A replacement week is not subject to the flex restriction provided your deposit or the check-in of the exchange you would be canceling is more than 60 days away. Obviously you wouldn't want to do this until much closer to your expiration.

That sounds like a perfect plan since I just made another exchange for Jan 2015 :D I will just cancel this ongoing search for now. Thanks.

How does unit size fit into a replacement week? If the original trade was from a studio to a studio, does the replacement HAVE to be a studio? If the original week was for a 1 bedroom trading into to a 2 bedroom? Will the replacement week also get a 2 bedroom? 1 Bedroom? Studio? Does season matter?

I heard that you should cancel as close to the original booking date as possible as then you get 1 year from the cancellation date...better check before you cancel, might be better to wait until Nov to cancel or later.

The replacement week is supposed to have approximately the same trading power as the original deposit- same size, same resort. You lose any discounted M to M or S to S exchange fee and the replacement week will cost the regular exchange fee regardless of whether it is an in network exchange. I have had experience with a Starwood replacement week and it retained preference. There have been reports that agents have said that this is not the case for Marriott weeks. I don't think anyone has confirmed this with a Marriott replacement week.

You will want to cancel the exchange week outside of 59 days or it will only be good as a flexchange. I have had luck using e plus with a replacement week getting additional time on the replacement week. It seems like II fiddles with this so I am not sure if this will always be the case. You can always add eplus to the replacement week and then check and if it doesn't extend the week you can call and cancel it within the 24 hour grace period.

A "Replacement" week is a reference to the deposit that II gives you once you cancel. It is a manual process because the system was not programmed to automatically return your original deposit. It is not a reference to the exchange you end up receiving. The replacement "deposit" will be the same size as the original deposit but you are not restricted to any size on the secondary exchange.

Replacement week: will be another deposit with similar trading power. I ended up with the same week back.
Timeframe: the new deposit will only be valid for 1 year from the date of cancellation. If you cancel less than 60 days out, you are restricted so you want to cancel just before that, but not too long before. This means that you will want to cancel probably late October (depending on which Jan week you have) and your week will be good until October or early Nov 2015.
Cost: you will pay an additional exchange fee.

Got it....thanks!!

I simply don't understand this restriction. Why should extending your deposit instantly make it a flexchange only deposit? Perhaps they should have a tiered fee, one fee for a restricted deposit once extended and another for unrestricted.
