Is this normal?

Hi,

I am new to timesharing and have been reading everything I can get my hands on...has anyone ever heard of a timeshare week being floating and the unit being floating? I thought you had assigned weeks and units and if you wanted to give them up or trade you could?

I own a floating week, what it means is I have to call the resort and book a week that is available. It works well if it's a large resort with a lot of availability. I own at Westgate in Kissimmee, FL where there is no shortage of avialable units. What I like is I can also book my week at any of the other Westgate resorts if there is availability.

You have to do your research to understand if there are any blackout weeks or other restrictions, including any internal exchange fees. Not all floating weeks are equal so make sure you know what kind of "trading power" it will have to reserve weeks internally.

For mine, I reserve for free if I use it in the year the week is for, if I reserve for the next year I pay an internal exchange fee. Also, if I use part of the unit (lockoff) once and another part another week, I need to pay the exchange fee for the 2nd useage. I'm sure there are a lot of variations of how floating weeks work at different resorts.

Also, if I want to deposit into II I have to call the resort to reserve a week, then that week is deposited into II for external exchange.

Floating Timeshare Weeks & Fixed Timeshare Weeks Are Both O.K.

Yes -- normal as blueberry pie.

Fixed weeks at fixed units are normal.

So are floating weeks.

Ditto points-converted weeks.

( It's a jungle out there. )

Full Disclosure: We own 1 fixed timeshare week + 1 biennial floating timeshare week + 2 dinky triennial points units (not that there's anything wrong with any of that).

As others have stated, it's Perfectly Normal. You just need to learn the rules the resort has in place for reserving your week(s). I own Floating weeks that Guarantee me a week within a 3 month (Season) as long as I reserve it more than 45 days in advance. within 45 days it's first come first serve. I don't use an exchange co., but I believe some floating weeks resorts will pick the actual week that gets deposited. i.e. you want to deposit "Your" week RCI. you would call the resort and they would choose a week within your season and deposit it. Not sure what effect that may have +/- on your exchange "power" ??? RT

But yeah, my Marriot week is floating. Although it is assigned a specific unit/week, it floats anywhere within your season (Platinum/Gold/Bronze).
