I am a new poster here but have been lurking for a while trying to get a handle on timeshares. I think it's something we want to do, but it's a new world for us and a lot to take in. This is a great forum with a wealth of information and I'm glad I found it.

My wife and I have two little kids (5 and 6) and we live in California. We haven't taken as many vacations as we'd like due to the cost, and we're hoping a timeshare will be a way to help control the costs and allow us to take nice vacations on a regular basis. Our primary destinations would be California, Arizona, Hawaii, Colorado and maybe Florida now and then. We don't want to be tied to one location or one time of year.

I'm a little partial to Starwood, which is why I'm posting here.

I want to make sure I understand the benefits and obligations before I make the plunge. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the boards. My advice is to do a little more research primarily the limitations regarding different types of purchases. I think that Starwood could be a good fit since they have top resorts in the areas youve mentioned, but depending on whether or not you are tied to the school schedule you might want to consider a Mandatory resort as opposed to.a voluntary resort. A mandatory resort will come with StarOptions which you may need for some prime places in prime time. A mandatory resort will have a higher initial outlay, and a higher MF than a typical II trader but you are paying for that added flexibility. If you are flexible travelers, then a II trader like SDO is a great choice.

Also take a look at Hilton, they also have nice resorts primarily in the areas you mentioned, and they have a flexible point system, of course they trade with RCI and you would also get access to Disney resorts.

Good luck, you're on the right track.

Hi Sparky76 and weocome! :hi:

This would be a great entry level purchase for you. However, be aware that you do need to be flexible when exchanging. School holidays like Christmas, New Years, and Easter are hard to get on an exchange - summer is more doable.

You might also look at what is available for rent here on TUG and places like Redweek and VRBO.com. You might decide that renting is cheaper and less hassle than buying something, at least for another year or so. If/when you decide to buy a timeshare, we'll be happy to answer your questions!

This is a good to great price. Laman34 is also a trustworthy seller to buy from. I bought my first SDO 2BR unit from him in June.

That listing is well hidden! It is listed under "Desert Oasis" and not "Sheraton Desert Oasis" so I could not find it!

I have one and am very happy with the trades that I have got. IMO, it will go for under $500, possibly only the min bid since it is a harder to find on eBay than the other SDO.
