Is there much to see west side of Oahu?

We have been to Oahu four times now and I have yet to find a way to see the west coast of Oahu.

For photos is it worth the drive? We will have a full week this time so maybe I can fit into our schedule. I know we can drive to Maili from looking at a map and then head back to the center of the island. Or we could drive to the end of 930. After reading the thread about moving to Hawaii I have some concerns about going that far north on 930. Just from looking at the map maybe we can head to the Makaha Resort and eat there.

The west coast of Oahu has large homeless encampments, which seemed kind of dangerous to us. We visited one of the beaches one time and right when we stepped on the beach, one guy ran up and slugged another guy in the face and a fight broke out. Needless to say - we left. If you visit the area, I'd stay away from the homeless camps.

I live (6mos) on the west side of Oahu. For the most part the homeless are gone. The majority if not all the parks on the leeward side are cleaned and some are gated. There still are homeless encampments. As far as visiting we frequently drive up to Kaena Pt. the beaches are beautiful and depending on the time of the year there can be some great surf.
There is a six mile (round trip) hike around Kaena pt. I called it the death march. Anyway, you can see the nesting albatross and sometimes there are sea lions on the beach
Come out and visit KoOlina and I'll buy you the beverage of your choice at the bar of your choice. The KoOlina beaches are open to the public but the parking is very limited.
Nimitz and White Plain beaches (Barbers Pt.) are beautiful and the Navy runs a surfing school (only for the military).
We drove to the top of Timberline (Camp Timberline http://www.kamaainakids.com/
you may not have time to do this but the views of diamond head and the leeward coast are terrific. Also, if you're up for it they have some great hiking trails.
There is great snorkeling at Electric Beach (across Farrington from the power plant). I know Denise doesn't like this but many of the dive boats take their passengers to this beach because they can snorkel with the dolphins. You can do the same thing from the shore and it's free.

Sea Lions?

On our last day we had a late flight out last July. We decided to drive that part of the island and see what was there. We couldn't beleive the homeless camps we saw on the beaches along the coast. The towns along the area seem very depressed. If you do venture here I wouldn't stop near these camps. It didn't seem like a safe area. It's to bad because the coast looked nice.

Hi Gary,

We have a timeshare at the hawaiian Princess, (Makaha), and have "always" heard the "horror" stories about the west shore. We will NEVER trade our Hawaiian Princess timeshare; we always feel very comfortable in the area; and I feel "sorry" for the "press" that we are NOT welcome in that area.

I might assume that if you "invade" a homeless encampment, and people don't know you, then there "might" be some questions. Being a military (now retired military) person, throughout the world, I have gone to MANY places/villages/etc---and with a smile on my face, I have ALWAYS felt welcome, AND, have been welcomed !!! Don't try to be the "ugly American", and people will treat you "correctly".

On the west shore, there are many "good" photographic opportunities. If you go "over the mountain", to Dillingham/Haleiwa (sp?), and to the "north shore beaches", you will find MANY MORE opportunities to use your camera(s) !!!

I would highly recommend going to the beach or lagoons around the Marriott Timeshare and Illihani Hotel. However, there is not much parking and you should go on a weekday during the morning. There is a nice walkway and lots of grass next to the beach. It is very nice and clean because Marriott keeps it that way. The beach is open to the public.

White Plains Beach near Barbers Point on West Side is terrific for those who are not expert surfers

It is run by the military but open to public, beautiful with a nice view of Honolulu

We took a catamaran sail from KoOlina which was wonderful -- very scenic and we saw lots of dolphins and some whales (in the distance). We booked it from Waikiki and transfers were included.

Not worth the time and drive

We have gone thru the back gate at Schofield Barracks about ten times over the years and it is a very scenic drive but only if you have a military ID Card and then sometimes it is closed. We once got a timeshare at Makaha and it seems like a beautiful place for those who wanted to stay there the whole week but looking at the barbed wire going around the fence and also seeing the beach encampments we do not feel it is safe to walk those beaches. We calle dour exchange company the first morning and moved to a Waikiki location available.Drive to the beaches at Barber's point or the Marriott Resort but why go west??

Years ago, circa 1970's, Makaha was the site of some of ABC Wide World of Sports surfing competitions, not sure about the competitions now, but we used to love to go to Makaha and further toward Kaena. This was back when I was in JH and HS.

Years later, taking my own family there, I discovered quickly it wasn't like back in the 70's anymore. My wife and sons don't want to go there at all, so we head to North Shore.

This drive from Pearl City to Yokohama Beach has many State campgrounds where the locals enjoy time off. There is no huge population of homeless criminals in this area. There are a few homeless but 99% of these people are just enjoying time off. There are also guys that net bait on this coastline that may look a little scrubby but they are just making a living. Its pretty safe to go down to the beaches and ask whats up ? You may get invited to a picnic dinner. We did. You may enjoy listening to a real Hawaian. The uncrowded beaches are clean and the sunsets are fantastic.

There is way more crime in Honolulu where all the drugs are.
