Is ANY enrolled week worth having?

My parents have a Cypress Harbour week that I helped them enroll by watching a webinar and getting free enrollment. It’s a sport week. (Would you believe they paid 16k for it?)

They are talking about “selling” it due to the recent pandemic (they also both are getting over COVID 19) so they are not sure they will be traveling any time soon. Due to their age as well they are thinking they won’t use it much.

I have told them in the past (very gently) that their week is worth zero. However- as their child I’m thinking if they passed it to me, it would still be enrolled, correct? I own 3 resale weeks now, and none of them are eligible to be enrolled. The Cypress Harbour only gives I think 1975 points. But it would get me in the points game and I could then rent more if I needed.

A drawback would be - I’d have too many weeks and I don’t know which, if any, I’d want to get rid of. And I would have two II accounts.

Would you even bother with this week for the points aspect? I’d never go to Orlando in sport season ever. I could still trade the week in II.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure if it would maintain enrollment if gifted to you, or if it would just maintain eligibility to be enrolled by you, once gifted. May want to check into that. May be a moot point if they are still allowing free enrollment for watching a video, but may not be if that promotion has ended.

Thanks Fasttr, I had just assumed it would stay enrolled. I thought I read that on here. Not sure.

I’m sitting on an enrolled Vail week. Only worth 750 DC points, with a MF of about $750. I debate the same thing periodically, even trading for Bonvoy points sometimes, 110K EOY.

I’d evaluate the MF and annual club dues against its trade value in Interval and its other value, the ability to rent points.

Since they are your parents, it should remain enrolled. As a family member you’d be inheriting it. You’d lose no benefit.

I believe in your specific circumstances it would remain enrolled BUT the paperwork to transfer it into your name must be handled very carefully. I think Marriott would be able to advise you (or your parents) as to what needs to be filled out to assure the continued enrollment in your name (i.e. birth certificate, etc.).

.

OP may wish to compare this to the economics of purchasing 1500 resale points @ <$1/point and paying Marriott's ~$3/point enrollment fee. Cost -- about $6K total; MF's -- about $900/year.

Upfront cost is obviously higher, MF's are probably lower, Interval trading is probably worse, but it also permits entry into the world of points.

I don't know if this is better or worse, but it is an alternative.

Thanks for the suggestion! Definitely worse for me bc I don’t want to layout the money. I may need to pay back my renter for my St. Thomas week he rented and might not be able to go to in August. Then I’ll have yet another week stuck on Interval. Not a good year to spend upfront. It would be less in maint fees though. I think CH is about $1300 a year.

I likely wouldn't take it if you're not going to use it yourself routinely. It's an Orlando week, it's not a lockoff and the points for dues are not very favorable. It's a good resort to use but not for points or exchanging. If done correctly as their child it would stay enrolled. Better might be to add your name to the deed and become the primary on that account.
